Chapter 3
Barbara frowned deeply, worry written all over her face. "Curtis, you're Talia's favorite grandson and the chosen heir of the Guerrero family. So why did Vita end up as the CEO's wife?
"Don't tell me Vita was so shameless that she went after your grandfather just to get the Guerrero family to invest in the Holden family. Your grandma probably got mad because of that and ended up in the hospital with a heart attack."
Suddenly, a little girl came running down the stairs from the second floor. She stood tall and proud next to Vita, glaring at Barbara. "Hey, don't talk badly about my mom. Watch what you say!"
She puffed up her cheeks and added, "Just wait till my dad gets home. He'll teach you a lesson, and you'll be in big trouble. You'll have to work forever!"
Then, the little girl leaned her head against Vita's waist, her voice full of grievance. "Mom, you finally came home. Why won't you come upstairs and draw with me?"
Vita looked at Miranda Guerrero with a gentle smile, running her fingers through Miranda's long hair. "Miranda, I just got back from Parial. I'm still jet-lagged."
Curtis's eyes nearly popped with fury when he saw Miranda. He kept glancing between Vita and Miranda, fixating on how much Miranda looked like Vita.
He shouted, "Vita, you shameless woman. How dare you betray me and have a child with another man?
"Spit it out. Who's the father of this brat?"
Barbara was egging him on from the sidelines. "Curtis, your grandfather is the head of the Guerrero family. You see what's going on here..."
She didn't spell it out, but everyone knew exactly what she meant.
Curtis's expression twisted from shock to utter disbelief as he stared at the nine-year-old Miranda. He said, "Seriously? My dad had a bunch of bastards when he was young.
"Grandpa spent half his life chasing him around, beating him up, and cursing him out. But I never thought that Grandpa would lose his dignity in his twilight years and give me a little aunt!"
Curtis's father, Darren Guerrero, was a trust fund kid. He was filthy rich, but with no sense of decency.
He couldn't stand sticking to just one woman, so he kept several mistresses on the side. By the time Curtis was three, Darren had already saddled him with a few half-siblings.
The youngest was a boy named Kieran Guerrero.
Curtis's grandfather, Ronald Guerrero, wasn't about to let his only son ruin the family's reputation.
He forced Darren to pay off all his mistresses and dragged him back home to play the role of the prodigal son who'd finally cleaned up his act.
But Darren's old habits never died down.
In the end, Darren couldn't fight temptation. He was seduced by his mistress. He also had a soft spot for Kieran, so he never cut ties with Kieran and his mom.
Curtis glared at Vita with pure disgust in his eyes. "Vita, do you even care about your reputation? Just to save the Holden family, you actually threw yourself at my grandfather? He was already seventy-six ten years ago!"
Barbara chimed in, "Curtis, back in our village, men in their seventies can't have kids. This girl looks old enough to be in grade school. Are you sure she's really a member of the Guerrero family by blood?"
Barbara said, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at Vita, "Curtis, Vita really messed up your life. Vita, just admit you were wrong, okay?
"It's not like you wanted to cheat or planned to hook up with his grandpa. The Holden family totally screwed you over. They forced you into this mess just to get their hands on the Guerrero family's money.
"Vita, just say you're sorry, and Curtis will let it go. You trashed your reputation with all this drama, but once you walk away with nothing, you'll get your honor back. Your daughter won't have to deal with people calling her a bastard anymore."
Vita was so exasperated by their nonsense that she actually burst out laughing. She found these two unbelievable.
Barbara kept pretending she was looking out for Vita, but she was stirring up drama and dragging Vita's name and the Guerrero family's reputation through the mud.
For the past ten years, Ronald had spoiled Vita like she was his granddaughter.
Whenever he went overseas for a vacation or to recover from an illness, he'd bid on jewelry at auctions and have his assistant personally deliver it to her by private jet.
