Holden's mother asked to meet me just as I'd decided to end things with him. A check glided across the table. Her voice was cool and sharp with contempt. "One million. Leave my son." My heart raced at the string of zeroes, but my eyes instantly glistened with tears. "Mrs. Wellesley," I began, voice trembling, "What Holden and I have is real. You can't put a price on that." Linda let out a cold, derisive laugh. "Real love? What is that actually worth?" I bit my lip, and a perfectly timed tear rolled down my cheek. "It might mean nothing to you," I said, anguish laced with defiance. "But to me, it's worth two million." She looked utterly stunned. She'd clearly never seen true love negotiate.
