What I really needed to do was learn to let go of my old life. I had to trust myself to live in the present and stop regretting what was already gone.

When I was ten, Mindy won first place in a regional competition. Mom posted a whole grid of photos online, each one showing Mindy on the podium, holding her trophy, medal hanging around her neck, her smile lighting up her whole face.

Dad happened to be home that day. He saw me looking at my phone and asked casually, "What are you looking at?"
