Chapter 3
Edward shouted, "Richard, you abandoned my mom, let your mistress take her place, and now you're taking it out on my wife and son? How dare you!"
Edward pointed a gun at my mom's forehead.
My mom was so scared that she couldn't say a word, and Richard kept a dark face and stayed silent.
I just watched everything with a cold, indifferent gaze.
If he had protected me like this back then, maybe we wouldn't have been in this mess now.
That was all behind me, anyway.
With Harry in my arms, I took my seat and kept my head down, quietly eating.
The whole meal was suffering.
After dinner, I took Harry's hand and started upstairs, but Edward scooped Harry up in his arms and brought me along with them.
I went into the room first and lay down, while Edward stayed with Harry, playing some father-son games.
Harry grinned, showing his cute little canine teeth, and hugged Edward. He said, "Dad, my birthday is the day after tomorrow. Will you celebrate with me?"
Edward gently pinched Harry's cheek. "Of course, I'll be there for your birthday."
Suddenly, my mom pushed the door open, smiled and nodded at Edward, then took my hand and led me out.
Once we were alone in a quiet spot, my mom handed me a card.
"Take your son and leave this house. There's 300 grand on this card," she said.
I pushed the card back to her. "Sorry, but I have other things to deal with."
My mom suddenly raised her voice. "What do you want from me? Are you trying to make me a laughingstock in front of all the noble ladies? You give me a headache just by being here.
"As long as you're in this house, I can't keep my place. If it weren't for you, my perfect wedding wouldn't have been ruined. Just get out!"
I ignored her and headed back to my room.
My mom suddenly grabbed my hand. "If you won't leave, don't blame me for what I do next."
"Suit yourself," I said, yanking my hand free and heading inside.
As soon as I walked in, I saw Edward kneeling on one knee, clutching a bunch of sunflowers.
He said, "Yolanda, after you left, I finally realized how deeply I love you.
"It was all my fault. I shouldn't have put your mom's mistakes on you, and I never should've exposed your intimate photos in front of everyone just to hurt her."
His words were so heartfelt, and he was just like the boy I used to know.
Back in my first year of high school, my mom stopped giving me any spending money, and I spent a whole month hungry, shrinking down to skin and bones.
Edward took care of my bills every month.
Feelings grew between us, and by the time we graduated high school, he got down on one knee with a bunch of sunflowers in his hands.
"Yolanda, let's be together forever," he said.
But times had changed, and so had we. There was no going back for us now.
"Thanks for the sunflowers. I'm going to get some rest," I said.
Edward didn't get upset. He just stayed by Harry's side, helping him drift off to sleep.
The next morning, just as I got up, I heard a heated argument coming from downstairs.
"Dad, don't you love me anymore?" That was Harry's voice. I rushed down and found Harry on the floor.
Edward stood there, eyes rimmed red, staring at Harry.
"I really thought you were my son, but turns out you're nothing but a real bastard!" Edward snapped.
"Dad... I..." Harry's voice trembled, tears streaming down his cheeks.
I hurried over and held Harry close, running my hand through his hair to comfort him.
Edward shot me a deadly glare and then hurled the documents straight at my head.
The papers tangled up my hair as they hit me.
When I opened them up, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.
They were fake paternity test reports.
"Edward, if you really think Harry isn't your son, we're leaving right now," I said.
Edward let out a cold laugh. "Of course you're leaving. I don't raise bastards."
Harry lowered his head, the light in his eyes dimming.
Harry whispered, "Mom, let's go home."
Harry grabbed my hand, and together, we walked out.
When we got to the door, Harry paused and glanced back at Edward.
"Dad, will you celebrate my birthday with me today?" Harry asked.
Edward, seething with anger, snatched up a glass and flung it at Harry.
I pulled Harry back, and the glass smashed to pieces right in front of him.
Harry just smiled and walked out with me, never looking back.
That evening, Harry put on his favorite clothes and clutched his plane model, eagerly waiting in the living room for Edward to arrive.
There was only an hour left of Harry's birthday.
I picked up my phone and wanted to message Edward, but then I spotted his latest post on his social media.
Edward had posted: [Celebrating my son's birthday today.]
In the photo, the boy was beaming with joy, happily enjoying his cake.
I handed Harry my phone.
"He's not coming, Harry. Let me be the one to celebrate your birthday with you, okay?" I said.
Harry stared at the boy in the photo, his eyes filling with tears. He rushed into my arms, his whole body trembling.
"Mom, Dad doesn't want me anymore..." Harry choked out.
I gently ruffled his hair. "Tomorrow, I'll get your transfer paperwork sorted out. How about we move to another city with Mark?"
Harry hesitated for a moment. "Mom, I just want to hear Dad's voice one more time."
I softly wiped away his tears and dialed Edward's number.
Edward answered. "Yolanda, you really have the guts to call me?
"I'm busy celebrating my real son's birthday. Let me tell you, I won't waste my time on that bastard."
Harry gritted his teeth, and his little fists clenched so hard that his knuckles turned white.
I hung up and gently ruffled Harry's hair.
"Harry, I'll always love you. If someone doesn't care about us, then forget about them," I whispered.
Harry nodded and hugged me even tighter. "Mom, let's go get my transfer sorted out tomorrow."
