At Sterling Manor, I arrived with a gift, making my visit as proper as it got.

Evan's parents, Darren and Bridget Sterling, were both there, but Alex was nowhere in sight.

Of course he wasn't. He couldn't be in two places at once. He was right next to me, still playing Evan.

"Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, I know you never really paid much attention to Evan, so why not let him marry into our family?" I said, half-joking but with a hint of real intent.

Right after I said it, Darren nearly choked on his coffee, coughing hard.
