Chapter 3
"Dad said you regretted giving me your kidney the second you woke up," Mia whispered, clutching a throw pillow against her chest.
My surgical side burned with a dull, throbbing ache, but my voice remained steady. "Is that what he told you, Mia?"
"He said you told him my recovery was an emotional burden," she choked out, tears spilling over. "He said you refused to look at my post-op charts and demanded complete isolation because seeing me made you bitter."
A cold chill settled deep in my chest.
Mia unlocked her phone with shaking fingers and turned the screen toward me. The text from Ethan was right there: Claire doesn't want the stress of your recovery, sweetie. She asked for total space. That's why Mom came home to take care of you.
He had not simply abandoned me in surgical recovery. He had carefully crafted a lie, weaponizing a seventeen-year-old girl's fear of abandonment to justify replacing me with Rachel.
I could have screamed. I could have exposed every ugly truth right then. Instead, I took a slow breath and gently covered her trembling hand.
"Mia, I chose to give you my kidney because I love you," I said softly, looking straight into her eyes. "I don't regret it for a single second. None of this is your fault, and you do not belong in the middle of our marriage."
Relief washed over her pale face. "You really don't hate me?"
"Never. Now rest."
Bracing my incision, I walked upstairs to the guest room and closed the door. My grief had burned away, leaving behind pure, cold calculation.
I opened my laptop and logged into the hospital's patient portal. Under my donor medical profile, Ethan was listed as my emergency contact and healthcare proxy. With three firm clicks, I removed his name completely, replacing him with my mother and adding a strict note: Do not release medical updates to Ethan Reynolds.
Next, I called Vivian Vance, an elite family-law attorney.
"I'm filing for divorce," I said without hesitation. "My husband moved his ex-wife into our master bedroom while I was still in organ recovery, and he's lying to his daughter to push me out."
"Send me your documentation," Vivian replied instantly. "I'll draft the emergency separation papers and freeze the joint assets."
I uploaded the photos of the altered master suite, the digital lock logs, and the hotel bills. Just as the transfer completed, heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs.
