For the next two weeks, I felt like I was living a fractured existence.

During the day, I'd smile and go sample dishes with Alex. "This lobster is really good. You should try it."

"Yeah, it's great," Alex replied, picking up a piece and placing it on my plate with a warm smile.

I looked into his eyes and remembered his profile in the surveillance footage, when he walked into the restaurant arm-in-arm with Ellie.

He wore the exact same smile.
