Emma gave a small nod and didn't say anything else.

After a while, Emma said, "Lucas really cares about you."

I looked up at her.

She gazed off into the distance, her voice as flat as ever. "When he came back, blood was running down his leg, but the first thing he asked was if I'd seen you.

"When I said no, he looked like he'd seen a ghost and turned around, ready to run back out."

My chest tightened all of a sudden.

Turned out Lucas really did care about me.
