Chapter 6
I, along with Beck, followed Bennett to the Wellness Bridge Center.
In the VVIP suite on the top floor, we found Sia looking perfectly healthy, her cheeks rosy as if nothing had ever happened.
Apparently, after she was brought here yesterday, she must have gotten some proper rest, without Bennett's constant bickering around.
"Get out!
"Get the hell out!" Sia snapped at Bennett.
The moment Bennett stepped into the ward, a white pillow came flying toward the door. He dodged it nimbly, leaving the pillow to smack right into my face.
Beck immediately checked on me, worried I might be hurt. Thankfully, the pillow was soft and harmless. Still, I was really pissed off.
They were fighting, but I was the one who got hurt.
"From now on, don't walk behind Mr. Greenfield. Stay close to me. I'll shield you from any danger," Beck said protectively as he pulled me behind him.
I stomped on the white pillow to vent my frustration.
The two inside were putting on their own show, totally oblivious to everything else.
Bennett gripped Sia's chin as they launched right back into their never-ending routine, yelling "Get out!" and "Shut up!" over and over, like a broken record.
Beck thoughtfully closed the ward door. "They could be at it all afternoon," he said. "How about we take a stroll downstairs?"
We had barely taken a few steps when I couldn't help but notice a ridiculously handsome man. He had to be over 6'1", looking like he just walked off a runway or out of a movie set. He was striding toward us in a crisp white lab coat.
"Who's this guy?" I wondered.
I realized immediately that he was no ordinary guy.
"That's Dr. Hunter Hank, Mr. Greenfield's personal physician. Whenever Miss Sue has any medical issues, Dr. Hank is the one who handles them. Just like Shawn, he and Mr. Greenfield have been close friends since childhood." Beck introduced.
I nodded knowingly again.
He was the other indispensable sidekick every domineering CEO like Bennett needed, the doctor friend who was always on call 24/7, ready to be summoned for work at any hour, any place.
Who would've thought that in such a short time, I had already met both of Bennett's essential sidekicks?
"Dr. Hank."
"Beck."
Hunter and Beck exchanged greetings as they met.
"Bennett's condition can't be delayed any longer. You must find a way to get Sia away from him. As long as she's by his side, his condition will continue to deteriorate. That woman must be completely removed from his life."
Hunter was fervently determined to drive Sia away.
Beck said, "It's no use. Mr. Greenfield can't function without Miss Sue. Even if she's a second out of sight, he flies into a rage."
Beck was just an employee. How could he possibly send the boss's sweetheart packing?
I hesitated before speaking up carefully. "Um... Have you ever considered telling Miss Sue and letting her leave on her own?"
Silence fell.
Both Beck and Hunter went quiet.
"Honestly, it's obvious Miss Sue doesn't want to stay with Mr. Greenfield. If you just help her out, wouldn't it be super easy for her to escape?" I added.
If Sia would just make an effort on her own, then Beck, my poor boyfriend, wouldn't have to be stuck in this impossible position anymore.
"Easier said than done," Beck sighed.
His expression turned strange. "Miss Sue may resent Mr. Greenfield, and the two of them keep hurting each other and always arguing, but she's never once tried to run away."
I got it right away.
It turned out that Sia never meant what she said.
She kept asking Bennett to go away, but she never wanted to leave him.
Hunter said firmly, "Bottom line, Sia must leave Bennett's side."
Hunter was about to leave after saying this when a woman came rushing over from a distance and blocked his way. She was a woman who looked uncannily like Sia.
"Mrs. Lyle?" Hunter and Beck exchanged a look of utter shock.
So her husband was surnamed Lyle.
It was quite a special last name.
"Hunter, you're my only hope now. Lane's men are right downstairs. I can't let them find me. No way am I going back to him," she said.
Farah Lyle stared at Hunter with determination, utterly disregarding Beck and me.
Who would've thought that while Hunter was just Bennett's doormat doctor friend, in someone else's story, he was the second male lead doctor?
My eyes locked onto Farah's barely noticeable baby bump, and I couldn't help but suck in a sharp breath.
Oh my god. An actual pregnant runaway was happening right before my eyes.
Downstairs was the Wellness Bridge Center's lounge area.
I sat on the bench, listening intently as Beck filled me in on what happened with Farah. Hunter had already whisked her away, clearly helping her evade Lane's men who were searching for her.
"Mr. and Mrs. Lyle are childhood sweethearts and have been married for years. But their relationship is even more dramatic than Mr. Greenfield and Miss Sue's."
Beck tactfully explained to me.
I nodded earnestly. Running away while pregnant was undoubtedly dramatic.
Maybe Sia and Bennett would end up in the same kind of crazy drama one day.
"But..." Beck's face darkened further. "This is already the eighth time Mrs. Lyle pulled a pregnant runaway."
It was the eighth time.
That meant it was her eighth pregnancy.
Wow, no wonder she was the leading lady in a domineering CEO romance. What a baby-making machine.
That explained why Hunter whisked Farah away with practiced ease. After going through this seven times already, he could probably pull it off blindfolded.
Man, these main characters had insane stamina. Eighth time, and they were still at it.
"So, Mr. Greenfield's situation isn't so bad after all. Sure, he and Miss Sue love to argue and throw things, but at least their relationship is far less complicated than those of others," Beck told me.
From what he said, it was clear he had also considered whether to keep working for Bennett. But after he saw what the other domineering CEOs were like, Bennett actually came across as the more reasonable one.
I leaned back in the chair, finally able to relax after listening to all that juicy drama. Honestly, the world of these domineering CEOs was just too wild for outsiders to even comment on.
Looking up at the blue sky, I joked, "So much drama in one day. If this were a web novel, the scheming villainess would be making her entrance right about now."
At my words, Beck's face instantly darkened.
Before Beck could even tell me to stop jinxing things, a shrill, coquettish voice rang out from afar.
"Benny,
"Benny, where are you, Benny?"
Damn it!
I couldn't believe that as soon as I mentioned the villainess, she showed up.
A tall, strikingly sexy woman with flowing long hair and an icy, glamorous aura was strutting back and forth in the lounge area, her sky-high stilettos clicking against the floor as her figure-hugging dress accentuated every curve.
There was no doubt that the "Benny" she kept yelling for was Bennett.
Beck didn't bat an eye at the scene, clearly not his first time seeing this.
I hesitated, then couldn't help but ask Beck, "Is she always like this?"
Beck explained, "Miss Sienna Erin and Mr. Greenfield were childhood sweethearts. Their families have been close for generations. She was his fiancée until Miss Sue came along. Then Mr. Greenfield asked to call off the engagement. But Miss Erin has refused to accept it to this day."
Childhood sweethearts, a fiancée, and a broken engagement, they were the classic elements in a CEO romance novel.
"Seriously, has no one told her that if she wants to find Bennett, she could just call him? Why is she running around like a headless chicken, shouting his name everywhere? Does she really think that'll work?"
I couldn't help but facepalm. How could a rich and beautiful socialite like Sienna act so brain-dead?
"Sienna, I told you, stay out of my sight." By the window of the upstairs room, Bennett glared coldly down at Sienna below. His icy voice cut through the air, and Sienna's eyes instantly welled up with tears.
Seriously?
Did Bennett have superhuman hearing or something? How on earth could he hear Sienna calling from several floors away inside the building and even respond?
Sienna came storming into the ward, her stiletto heels clacking furiously against the floor.
Beck and I followed Sienna in, both tense, fearing things might turn ugly inside.
"Benny, what is this woman doing here?" Sienna asked.
Sienna jabbed a finger at Sia lying on the bed, demanding answers, completely oblivious to the irritated expression on Bennett's face.
"None of your business," Bennett snapped coldly.
He remained as cold as ever.
Sienna bit her lip in frustration. "Benny, I'm your fiancée. Of course, this is my business. We're getting married next month, yet you're still fooling around with this shameless woman."
"Shut up!" Bennett snapped.
His fury erupted.
My eyes widened in shock. I never expected this juicy drama to unfold right here.
I could understand Bennett preferring Sia over Sienna, but he was actually getting ready to marry Sienna while still clinging to Sia.
What a scumbag.
"Bennett, you disgust me!"
Pale and weak in her bed, Sia spat venom at Bennett.
Apparently, Sia had only just realized she was the other woman.
"How dare you scold Benny? This is all your fault. If you hadn't seduced him, none of this would've happened. You bitch!"
Sienna immediately jumped to Bennett's defense.
"How dare you insult her?" Bennett snapped.
Bennett flew into a rage instantly. No one was allowed to insult his woman.
Wow!
I couldn't believe my eyes. Sia snapped at Bennett, Sienna snapped at Sia, and Bennett snapped right back at Sienna.
What a flawless loop.
Tears streaming down her face, Sienna cried out in anguish, "Benny, this woman doesn't love you at all. Why can't you see who truly loves you?"
Ever since Sienna was little, she knew she was destined to marry Bennett. She was always the only one by his side until Sia showed up and ruined everything.
Bennett only had eyes for Sia.
"Beck!"
Bennett snapped impatiently.
Beck immediately stepped forward and said gently, "Miss Erin, perhaps you should head home for today." He gave me a meaningful glance. As a woman, I might be better suited to see her out.
I took the hint and stepped forward. Sienna looked completely defeated. Bennett's coldness must have crushed her. She just followed me out of the ward in a daze, without causing any more trouble.
Compared to Sia, Sienna was pretty easy to handle.
"Why?
"Why is Benny treating me this way?
"Where did I go wrong?"
Sienna, distracted and absent-minded, kept rambling in my ear, as if she simply couldn't figure out why Bennett didn't like her.
I really wanted to comfort her, but honestly, that was just how these stories go. It was fate.
In the fate of a domineering CEO, he was always destined to fall for a Cinderella like Sia, never for a rich and glamorous socialite like Sienna.
"If only Sia would just disappear forever," Sienna said darkly.
Suddenly, Sienna looked as if she had regained confidence.
A chill ran down my spine. Sienna had turned to the dark side.
Disappear for good? Was she planning to kill Sia?
The next second, Sienna's eyes locked onto me with terrifying intensity.
She hissed, "You'd better forget everything you just heard, or I'll take you down with her."
With that threat hanging in the air, Sienna instantly regained her composure and stormed off, her stilettos clicking sharply against the floor.
I stood there, and it suddenly dawned on me that this job wasn't going to be easy.
If I knew too much, I might be killed off.
Nervously, I told Beck what Sienna had just said. His face darkened instantly. Clearly, he understood exactly what Sienna was plotting.
Sia was an obstacle to Sienna. Naturally, Sienna was determined to get rid of her.
This elimination would definitely cross the line into criminal territory.
Sienna really lived up to her villainess title. Her thinking was even more dangerous than Bennett's.
Beck squeezed my hand reassuringly. "Don't worry. I'll handle this carefully. I'll make sure Miss Sue is well protected, and Sienna won't get anywhere near her."
"Shouldn't we tell Bennett about this?" I asked hesitantly.
Out of everyone around here, Bennett was the most capable. He was the CEO, after all. There was no way he would just stand idly by if the woman he loved was in danger.
"No way!"
Beck's tone turned uncharacteristically stern for the first time. "Sienna always follows through on her threats. She told you to keep this a secret. If Mr. Greenfield finds out, she'll know you spilled the beans, and she won't hesitate to come after you. I can't let you get caught in the crossfire."
My heart warmed. I knew Beck truly had my best interests at heart.
"Count me in. We'll protect Miss Sue together."
I made up my mind right away. I had to save my skin, and Miss Sue's, too. If anything happened to her, Beck and I would both be out of a job.
"Let's not dwell on that now." Beck changed the subject. "There's something even more important."
I was puzzled. What could possibly be more important than Sienna wanting to off Sia?
"Mara just quit."
I was caught off guard by Beck's words.
I never saw that coming.
Mara was supposed to be a pivotal figure who'd always stay by Bennett's side. How come she had quit out of the blue?
"Mara feels she's getting too old to handle Mr. Greenfield and Miss Sue's constant bickering. After seeing how you handled things by the pool the other day, she thought you'd be a perfect replacement. She's already told Mr. Greenfield that once she leaves, you'll take over her job."
My head was spinning, but one thing was for sure.
I had become the new Mara.
