Chapter 4
I stared at the luxury items on me and scattered across the floor. They were worth at least tens of millions, yet in Mara's eyes, they were all just junk.
Beck reached out and ruffled my hair. "Relax, Mara's seen things like this for decades. If she took things home every time, she'd need a whole warehouse just to store them all. If you like something, just take it with you."
I stared at Beck in disbelief. "Decades?"
I gasped; so Mara was far richer than I imagined.
Beck said nonchalantly, "Well, Mara was the personal housekeeper of Theo Greenfield, Mr. Greenfield's father, even before Mr. Greenfield was born. She's practically served two generations of the Greenfield family.
"Compared to Mr. Greenfield, things with his father were even messier."
I was totally dumbfounded.
I couldn't believe that Theo's situation could be even messier.
Beck said, "Theo has been trying to win the heart of his wife, Grace Lana, for over 30 years and still hasn't succeeded. Now, Grace is busy acquiring several aerospace companies, planning to develop a private manned spacecraft, and launch herself to Mars once it's ready.
"When that happens, Theo will have to chase her to Mars. Compared to Mr. Greenfield and Miss Sue just having their little cat-and-mouth game on Earth when they quarrel, Theo has it rough."
Beck's words completely blew my mind. Theo chasing Grace to Mars was beyond my wildest imagination.
I was completely baffled.
I gaped at Beck in disbelief. "You've been working in this circus for four years?" I had no idea his job was this demanding.
Beck pursed his lips and said, "Before I graduated, I had countless ambitions. But after becoming the Greenfield family's butler, I realized that all the fuss out there pales in comparison to the Greenfield family's dramas.
"But what matters most is that Mr. Greenfield pays way too well."
Beck lowered his head. He had long since sold out to the almighty dollar.
Beck graduated from a top university but faced repeated setbacks in the job market. Even low-paying jobs offering just a few thousand dollars a month subjected him to nitpicking interviews. Bennett offered him a butler position with a staggering monthly salary of 10 thousand dollars. There was no way he could say no to Bennett.
By this time, Beck's monthly salary had reached 30 thousand dollars. Even if Bennett, in a bad mood, instantly wiped out all Beck's bonuses, it didn't change the fact that Beck was rich.
"Enough talk. I'm definitely working here," I told Beck.
Gripping Beck's hands tightly, I made up my mind to stay here and share all the difficulties he was facing.
