Chapter 10

CHLOE'S P.O.V.

My phone beeps with a call from Jo.

“Chloe?”

“Yes?”

“I've confirmed what we discussed yesterday. Catherine has been in contact with Yvette.”

“I already guessed."

“How?”

“I saw Yvette myself.”

Jo exhales worriedly. “You went there alone?”

“I had to.”

“Chloe, you need to be careful. If Jasper finds out—”

“He won't.” I glance toward the mansion. “He still thinks I've surrendered.”

“And have you?”

A cold smile touches my lips. “Not even close.” I end the call and look toward the calendar. Lucas's birthday was only days away. Everything has to be perfect. The birthday party would be the stage where every lie they had built for years would finally collapse.

Later that afternoon, I drive to Pearl's Hotel. The ballroom was already being prepared. Tables were being arranged, flowers placed, and workers moved around carrying boxes.

I walk up to the manager.

“Mr. Willows.”

He turns and smiles. “Luna, everything is coming together beautifully.”

“Good.”

I reach into my handbag and pull out a small USB drive.

His smile fades slightly. “What is that?”

“This is something I need played during the party.”

He takes it cautiously. “A video?”

“Yes.”

“Should I add it to the official program?”

“No.” I lean closer. “Only play it when I give you the signal.”

He studies my face before nodding. “Understood.”

“And don't let anyone else access it.”

“Of course.”

I watch him place the drive inside a locked drawer, and I finally relax. One more piece was in place.

The following morning, I return to Yvette's location; I need to see her again. Not from a distance, face-to-face. I find her leaving the same apartment building and follow her to a supermarket.

For several minutes, I keep my distance, pretending to shop while keeping her within my sight.

Then she turns and our eyes meet. She looks away quickly.

Interesting.

She knows me, or perhaps she knows exactly who I am. I pick up a bottle from the shelf and approach her.

“Excuse me.”

She looks at me. “Yes?”

“Could you tell me where the milk is?”

Her eyes flick toward the other aisle.

“Over there.”

“Thank you.” I smile and walk away, but I don't leave. I wait until she reaches the checkout, then I walk up to her.

“Yvette Reed?”

Her face goes pale, and the bag in her hand slips slightly. “I think you've mistaken me for someone else.”

“No.” I pull out my phone, her eyes widening when she sees Lucas's picture.

“This is Lucas.”

She stares at the picture, her lips parting. “Where did you get that?”

“He's my son.”

She takes a step back. “That's impossible.”

I nod in agreement, “It is, because he's also your son.”

Her breathing becomes uneven. “Who are you?”

“My name is Chloe Bennett.” The color drains completely from her face. “Jasper's mate.”

The cashier looks between us; Yvette immediately grabs her bag.

“You shouldn't be here.” She blurts and turns to leave.

"Yvette," she pauses.

“Lucas is turning ten.”

Her shoulders stiffen.

“I want you to come to his birthday party.”

She slowly turns around. “Why?”

“Because he deserves to know who his mother is.”

Tears fill her eyes. “You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

I show her the invitation. “Pearl Hotel. Two days from now.”

She stares at it but doesn't take it. “Jasper will be furious.” She whispers.

“He doesn't have to know yet.”

Her eyes meet mine. “Come,” I say quietly. “If you still love your son, come.”

She says nothing, so I take that as my cue to leave. Behind me, I hear her breathing shakily. The trap was set. Now I only needed them to walk into it.

I step outside the supermarket, but I don't immediately return to my car. Lucas, the innocent child, had somehow gotten caught up in the web of lies.

My phone rings. “Chloe,” Jo says urgently, “did you meet her?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I invited her to the party.”

Josephine is silent for a moment. “Are you sure that's wise?”

“No.” I look back at the supermarket. “But I am sure it is necessary.”

“What if she doesn't come?”

“She will.”

“You sound very confident.”

“I showed her Lucas's picture. I'm banking everything on hoping that he is one of her weaknesses." I lower my voice. “Jo, I need you to make sure everything is ready. Especially the documents.”

“Already done.”

“And keep watching Catherine.”

“I will.”

I end the call and finally walk toward my car. I had no idea how the party would end. Maybe the plan wouldn't work, and it would all go to shit. Maybe Yvette would lose her courage and disappear again.

But whatever happened, I would not let them bury the truth another day. I had spent too long being quiet. And this time, I would make sure every lie was dragged into the light. Alpha or not, his family would pay.
