Chapter 3
On the day of Christmas Eve, after I finished all my part-time jobs, it was already eight o'clock in the evening.
I personally made a cake at the dessert shop and sent it to Hanley.
When I walked into the largest private room of the hotel with the cake, the dinner was over. The loud and noisy singing was deafening.
It was 11:50 pm.
There were only ten minutes left until Christmas.
Before I pushed the door open, a person was walking towards me.
It was Virgil Valdez, a student from the School of Software. He was also holding a cake in his hand.
We looked at each other, but neither of us said a word.
When we pushed the door in, the audience fell silent, and their eyes fell over.
Some people even turned on the main lights and turned off the ambient lights.
A person said, "Isn't this... Hanley has been waiting for a long time."
Another person asked, "What took you so long?"
A third person asked, "Isn't Virgill pursuing Chloe? Why is he here, too?"
Someone else said, "So the two biggest simps of Autumn University got together today."
There were a lot of whispers. I watched Virgil hand the cake to Chloe, then I gritted my teeth and quickly walked towards Hanley.
I handed the cake over and said, "Hanley, happy birthday."
After I finished speaking, I subconsciously glanced at the watch on the wall. When I turned to look at Virgil, he was also looking at the watch.
Hanley walked towards me while gnashing his teeth. "Gloria, how dare you only come at this time? You got some nerve!"
I gritted my teeth. Time was running out, so I decided to take a gamble.
I asked, "Hanley, I like you.
"Can I be your girlfriend?"
I looked into Hanley's eyes expectantly.
I was sure that he cared about me.
The surrounding group of people began to heckle.
I looked at Hanley in silence. Since he did reject me immediately, aglimmer of hope lit up in my heart.
Chloe came over with the cake in her hand, looked at the cake in my hand, and then threw the cake on the ground. She said, "Why did the cakes come from the same shop? This is so low.
"Virgil, why did you two buy the cakes from the same store? Don't you have any taste?"
Chloe's sarcastic remarks amused the crowd.
I looked at the smashed cake and bit my lip. My expression gradually soured.
Hanley seemed to have just reacted at this time. He first sneered and pretended not to care. "Gloria, since you are so smart, you surely know that people like me have to be with someone of equal status,
"How can someone like you match my status?"
Hanley spoke without mercy, just as he had rejected me every time before.
I didn't give up and asked very seriously, "This is the last time I will ask you. Are you sure that is your answer?"
After two years of company and service, I didn't believe that he didn't have any feelings for me at all.
I understood his preferences. I was always on call when he was sad. I also reminded him to take medicine regularly every day.
Habits were a terrifying thing.
I had been working hard for so long just to get the answer I wanted.
Hanley fell silent.
He was struggling.
While I was looking at the clock on the wall, I grew impatient
Time was running out.
Chloe grabbed the cake in my hand, gently pulled the ribbon on the cake, and took the cake out.
Chloe looked at my cake and said, "Gloria, you are really obsessive. I should give you a wake-up call."
Chloe threw the cake at me while disdaining me.
Her beautiful face was filled with disgust for me.
However, her eyes showed that she was quite unwilling to accept reality.
I sneered and didn't dodge.
I wanted her to act this way. She was afraid that I would pressure Hanley into making the choice she didn't want.
A figure stood in front of me, and most of the cakes that flew over were blocked by him.
There was a piece of cream that hit me right in the face.
I looked down, but someone grabbed my wrist. "Gloria, you are quite something. I admit defeat."
