Chapter 3
After some time, Shane stopped preparing surprises for me.
When he suddenly mentioned a surprise again, I looked up to him and smiled mockingly. "Shane, is the surprise really for me?"
Shane opened his mouth but was speechless.
Clearly, he also remembered what had happened.
Then he promised earnestly, "I was wrong before. I'll change, Erin. You must supervise me."
I nodded, not really caring.
Whether Shane changed or not no longer mattered to me. I just needed to get through this period, and then I could leave and go home.
In the days that followed, Shane stayed by my side constantly. He even prepared the food I ate.
Finally, it was the day I would be discharged.
It was snowing heavily outside. I stood at the entrance, waiting for Shane to drive over.
I waited for a long time, but there was no sign of him.
I took out my phone to call him. Only then did I see a message from Nora. [Erin, you can't win against me.]
Right after that, Shane called. "Erin, Nora's heart is showing signs of rejection. Why don't you go home first?"
My heart suddenly ached. I gasped for breath. "Shane, my chest is hurting too…"
Before I could finish, Shane impatiently interrupted me, his voice filled with a sense of righteousness, "Erin, I am a doctor.
"It's my duty to help my patients. As a doctor's girlfriend, you should understand instead of being unreasonable.
"Go home by yourself first. Once Nora's condition stabilizes, I will go back to you."
He hung up. Meanwhile, my hand trembled as I held my phone. My heart began to beat erratically again.
I could only sit on the cold ground, take out quick-acting heart medication from my pocket and swallow it, trying to calm my emotions.
Shane's meticulous care for me these past few days had reignited a glimmer of hope in me for him.
Now, he shattered this glimmer of hope.
I called up the system. "When can I leave here?"
The system said, "In seven days. That's your three-year anniversary with Shane."
I was stunned for a moment, then smiled bitterly. "A great day indeed."
I would always remember that day Shane was so panicked he trembled, yet couldn't hide the love in his eyes.
He said we must be together forever, and he would spend his entire life treating me well.
It hadn't been long, yet he had forgotten all that.
After my emotions settled down, I walked into the heavy snow without looking back.
Luckily, a taxi appeared in front of me very quickly.
I got in and told the driver the address. The driver glanced back at me repeatedly.
I chuckled, "Is something wrong?"
The driver looked at me with concern. "Miss, how long have you been out in the cold? Your lips are blue."
I blinked, feeling a warmth in my heart.
Blue lips were a symptom of a heart condition; I had just left the hospital and wasn't cold.
However, the sudden concern from a stranger made me want to cry.
I shook my head. "I'm not cold. Please drive carefully. I'm not in a hurry."
When we arrived at my address, I asked the driver to wait a moment, as I needed to pack a few clothes before going to a hotel.
But when I rushed to the door and tried to unlock the fingerprint lock, the door wouldn't open.
I thought it was because I was doing it wrong, but after several tries, I suddenly realized my fingerprint couldn't open the door.
Shane had deleted my fingerprint from the security system.
I called Shane to ask him for the password but my calls were hung up repeatedly.
Eventually, I couldn't get through to Shane's phone number anymore; I didn't know if his phone was off or if he had blocked me.
I had no choice but to get back into the taxi and smile at the driver, "Let's go to a hotel."
The driver looked at me sympathetically, then drove me to a hotel.
After I thanked the driver, I went and checked into a room.
Lying in bed, I breathed in clean air and drifted off to sleep.
In my dream, I saw Shane again.
He was cooking for me in the kitchen, making sweet and spicy dishes that I loved but couldn't eat.
I watched as plate after plate of dishes were placed in front of me, and tears fell uncontrollably.
Shane walked over to me, pulled me into his arms, and gently wiped away my tears. "Don't cry," he said. "You're healthy now, and you'll be able to eat these dishes again."
I was immersed in the beautiful dream of having a loved one and a healthy body, and was reluctant to wake up.
It wasn't until I was pulled into a warm embrace that I was forced to open my eyes.
Shane was trembling slightly, and behind him stood a fearful hotel staff.
Before I could fully come to my senses, Shane questioned angrily, "Erin, have you forgotten your heart condition?
"How can you run away from home in a blizzard just to spite me? What if you have a heart attack?"
