Chapter 1
Brenda Miller snatched the heavy cooler straight from Elena Grant's doorstep, completely ignoring the glowing neon sticker that screamed: WARNING: LETHAL BIOHAZARD.
She didn't care about the black skull-and-crossbones emblem stamped across the lid.
She didn't care about the bold red lettering underneath: RAW WILD FUGU. FATAL TETRODOTOXIN PRESENT.
All Brenda saw through the frosted seal was a massive, fifteen-pound imported fish.
"Stuck-up little woman," Brenda muttered under her breath, a greedy smirk twisting her wrinkled face. "Ordering luxury delicacies while regular folks struggle. It's mine now."
She hauled the frozen container across the hallway into Unit 204 and slammed her deadbolt into place.
Five minutes later, Elena Grant opened her front door in a chef's apron, expecting her culinary delivery.
Her welcome mat was completely bare.
Elena frowned and tapped her smartphone. The tracking app displayed a high-resolution delivery photo timestamped four minutes ago: Delivered to Front Porch.
Her dark eyes instantly narrowed with cold precision.
She pulled up her smart doorbell app to review the footage. The thief had calculated their approach, hugging the shadow of the concrete pillar to swipe the container from the camera's blind spot.
A sharp, icy chill raced down Elena's spine.
This wasn't an ordinary stolen package.
Inside that cooler was a wild tiger blowfish flown in directly from Tokyo for a private culinary tasting tonight. It was entirely raw, whole, and uncleaned. The liver, skin, and ovaries were saturated with pure, concentrated tetrodotoxin -- a lethal neurotoxin twelve hundred times deadlier than cyanide.
A single microscopic drop could paralyze a human diaphragm within minutes.
If someone cooked it without licensed culinary techniques, they wouldn't just suffer food poisoning. Their lungs would freeze, and they would suffocate in agony while fully conscious.
Elena checked her luxury watch.
5:42 PM.
Peak dinner preparation time.
Whoever stole that box was likely in their kitchen at this very moment, holding a chef's knife, ready to butcher the deadly fish for their family.
Elena didn't waste a single breath panicking. She turned on her heel, dashed down the emergency stairwell to the parking garage, and popped the trunk of her SUV.
She grabbed a high-powered emergency megaphone from her vehicle safety kit.
Elena marched straight into the center of the three-story townhouse courtyard. She flipped the red power toggle. A piercing electronic screech sliced through the peaceful evening air.
Dozens of living room lights flickered. Balcony doors cracked open.
Elena raised the megaphone to her lips, her voice booming across the brick complex like an emergency air-raid siren:
"Attention, everyone in Building B! My package was just stolen from porch 203!"
Curtains parted across three floors. Neighbors leaned over the railings, whispering in shock.
"Whoever took that cooler -- listen to me carefully!" Elena announced, her tone icy, clear, and urgent.
"That container holds uncleaned, raw wild tiger blowfish! It is packed with fatal neurotoxins! Do not touch it! Do not cook it! Eating that fish is guaranteed suicide!"
