Chapter 2
Chapter Two
I gasped awake, my hand flying to my throat as phantom pain seared through my neck. My fingers trembled as they traced the unmarked skin where Darius's fangs would soon pierce—had once pierced—in the marking ceremony. My other hand instinctively cradled my flat stomach, the ghost of my unborn child's weight still vivid in my mind.
The morning sunlight streaming through the curtains felt wrong, obscene even. How could the world look so normal when everything had changed? When I had died and somehow returned?
I stumbled to the mirror, gripping the edges of the vanity as I stared at my reflection. The face looking back at me was younger, unmarked by the months of pregnancy and betrayal that had aged me in my previous life. My eyes, though—they held the knowledge of what was to come. Of the blade that had sliced through my flesh as I lay weak from childbirth, of my sister's cold smile as she watched my lifeblood drain away, of my newborn's first and final cries.
'This isn't possible,' I whispered, my voice cracking. But the evidence was undeniable. Somehow, the Moon Goddess had granted me a second chance. A chance for vengeance.
A knock at the door startled me from my thoughts.
'Elara? Are you ready?' My mother's voice, gentle and excited. 'Everyone's waiting for the bride!'
Bride. Today was my marking ceremony with Darius. The beginning of my end in my previous life.
'Just a moment,' I called back, forcing lightness into my tone. My mind raced with possibilities. I could run. I could expose Darius and Myra now. I could refuse the marking.
But what proof did I have? Nothing but memories of a future that hadn't happened yet. They would think me mad, or worse, a traitor to the pack. And Darius—he would find a way to silence me, just as he had before.
No. I needed to be smarter this time.
'Coming, Mother,' I said, smoothing my ceremonial white dress. The decision crystallized in my mind with cold clarity. I would go through with the ceremony. I would become Luna again. And from within, I would orchestrate their downfall.
---
The ceremonial chamber was exactly as I remembered—adorned with moonflowers and silver candles, the pack gathered in concentric circles around the sacred stone altar where Darius waited. His handsome face broke into a practiced smile as I entered, his dark eyes gleaming with what I had once mistaken for love.
Now I recognized it for what it was: possession. Acquisition.
As I walked the path toward him, memories assaulted me with such vivid force that I nearly stumbled.
*Myra's voice, thick with false concern: 'Everyone out! The Luna needs privacy for her delivery!'*
*The agonizing contractions as I labored alone, desperately calling for help that wouldn't come.*
*The phone call—Darius and Myra's passionate moans filling the empty room as I bled on the cold floor.*
*Their whispered conversation over my weakened body: 'No one can ever know... The child complicates things... We have no choice...'*
*The knife, glinting in the moonlight. The searing pain as it entered my flesh. My baby's first cry silenced forever.*
I blinked back to the present as I reached the altar. Darius extended his hand, and I took it, forcing my face into a mask of joy and anticipation. His touch made my skin crawl, but I smiled up at him as if he were my salvation rather than my executioner.
'Today,' the Elder intoned, 'we witness the sacred union of Alpha Darius Vargan and his chosen mate, Elara Nightshade.'
I let the ceremony wash over me, playing my part perfectly. The docile, honored bride. The grateful mate. All the while, I was cataloging faces in the crowd, noting alliances, remembering who had stood with Darius after my death, who had questioned the convenient story of my 'tragic passing during childbirth.'
And then I saw him—Kaelan Thorne. Standing rigid at attention among the Beta warriors, his gray eyes fixed on me with an intensity that seemed to pierce through my carefully constructed facade. In my previous life, I had barely noticed him, too consumed with my devotion to Darius. Now, I recognized the anguish in his expression, the barely contained tension in his powerful frame.
Something fluttered in my chest, a recognition I couldn't name. But before I could analyze it, the moment for the marking arrived.
'With this bite, I claim you as mine,' Darius declared, his voice carrying across the silent chamber. 'Before the Moon Goddess and our pack, I bind you to me for eternity.'
He lowered his head to my neck, and I tilted my head in submission, exposing the vulnerable curve where neck met shoulder. His fangs pierced my skin, and I couldn't suppress a gasp at the sharp pain. The magic of the ritual washed over us, creating what I now knew was a false bond—a mockery of the sacred mate connection.
When he pulled away, his lips stained with my blood, the pack erupted in cheers and howls of approval. I maintained my smile, even as I felt Darius's satisfaction pulse through our new bond. He thought he had secured his future, his legacy, his power.
He had no idea that he had just welcomed his destruction into his home, his bed, his life.
---
Night fell, and with it came the part of the ritual I had been dreading most. The consummation. The wedding night.
Darius entered our chamber reeking of wine and triumph. He approached me where I sat at the vanity, brushing my hair—a picture of wifely anticipation.
'My beautiful Luna,' he murmured, his hands falling heavily on my shoulders. 'Finally mine.'
I met his eyes in the mirror, forcing warmth into my gaze. 'Yes, Alpha. Yours.'
His hands moved to the ties of my nightgown, clumsy with desire and drink. 'I've waited for this for so long.'
*Not as long as you waited to bed my sister*, I thought bitterly, but I turned to him with practiced desire in my eyes. I would endure this. I would give him what he wanted—the perfect, submissive mate. I would make him believe I was completely his, utterly devoted.
And all the while, I would be planning, watching, waiting for the moment to strike.
As he claimed my body, I retreated deep within myself, focusing on each step of the revenge I would exact. His pleasure meant nothing. His passion was empty. I responded with carefully calibrated sighs and caresses, building the illusion of the perfect mate bond.
When it was over and he lay sleeping beside me, I stared at the ceiling, my mind clear despite the violation I had endured. This was just the beginning. The first step in a long game.
This time, I wouldn't be the one to die bleeding and betrayed.
This time, I would be the one holding the knife.
