By the time I reached the hotel, Tristan had called eleven times.

I turned my phone face down on the nightstand.

It vibrated again before I had taken off my coat.

Lenora, where are you?

Then another.

Why did you leave your ring?

A minute later:

Please answer me.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed one hand against my stomach.

The cramping had faded, but I could still remember the fear that had gone through me when it started.

For seven weeks, I had protected this pregnancy like a secret I was afraid to say aloud.
