Chapter 1
It was my job to write love letters for Cole Bennet, the hottest guy in class.
There were other people who did this, but for some reason, everyone came to me.
It was probably because my letters worked eighty percent of the time.
Cole was the only one who didn't fall for it.
Then one day, in front of everyone, he demanded to know who'd been sending him love letters for a whole month.
Tessa Morgan, afraid he'd hate her, immediately threw me under the bus and said, "I saw her put the letters in your desk. She begged me not to tell you."
Everyone burst out laughing, saying I was just dreaming if I thought I had a shot with Cole.
But then Cole walked right up to me, a teasing look in his eyes, and said, "Your letters were pretty impressive. How about being my girlfriend?"
*****
The moment he said that, you could see the shock written all over Tessa's face.
After all, she was the one who'd hired me to write those letters for her.
She was giving me frantic looks from the side, her eyes practically screaming that I would be dead meat if I said yes.
I shot her a reassuring nod, silently telling her to relax, and that I knew what I was doing.
The next second, I flashed a smile and said, "Of course I'd love to have the hottest guy in class as my boyfriend."
Hearing that, Cole tossed the love letter aside, shoved his hands in his pockets, and strolled out, like he was bored with how things turned out.
Tessa glared at me. She dragged me into a corner and whispered fiercely, "Nicole Hayes, are you out of your mind?"
It was clear that Tessa could not see the big picture.
I let out a sigh. "Tessa, if I hang around Cole, I can help you fend off all those other girls and even help you get some one-on-one time with him."
Normally, if someone hired me to write a love letter and it didn't work out, that was their problem, not mine. But Tessa was way too generous to turn down.
Once my reputation blew up, I started charging ten dollars for each letter.
But Tessa had hired me to write letters for a whole month for one thousand dollars. As long as I kept working for her, the money would keep coming in.
Tessa eyed me warily. "What if you actually fall for him?"
I held back an eye roll. To me, Cole had no plus points except his pretty face.
But I played along to stay on Tessa's good side. "Honestly, I think Cole's totally into you. He just doesn't realize it yet. He's too proud to admit it. He wouldn't even bother looking at someone like me."
She instantly relaxed after hearing that.
Tessa pulled out her phone and sent me another 600 dollars as she instructed, "From now on, your job is to be Cole's simp. You will stick to him like glue wherever he goes."
It seemed she was still salty about me holding onto that girlfriend title. It did not matter anyway. As long as I was paid, I had no regrets.
The next morning, I set the breakfast I bought on Cole's desk. It was a bottle of milk and a sandwich.
Cole barely glanced at it, but before he could say a word, his sidekick jumped in to roast me, "Nicole, only you would eat something so malnutritious. Aren't you worried you'd get sick?"
The whole class burst out laughing.
I swallowed hard. My hands were a blur as I snatched up the milk and sandwich.
"Sorry, this is the best I can do. I know it's not good enough for you, but one day I'll get you whatever you want for breakfast," I mumbled.
I'd originally planned to have the milk and sandwich for breakfast after putting on the act of a simp.
But Cole called out to me. "Hey, if my girlfriend spent money on this, of course I'm gonna eat it."
I forced a stiff smile, gritting my teeth. "As long as you don't mind."
I had assumed Cole wouldn't touch that stuff, so I didn't even get anything for myself. I never thought that he would actually want to eat it.
Worried my stomach would start growling for everyone to hear, I pretended to be all shy and made a quick escape.
As soon as I stepped out of the classroom, I saw Cole chuck the milk and sandwich straight into the trash.
He shrugged, "Trash belongs in the trash."
I fumed silently. There was no reason why he had to waste food like that!
The next day, I only walked into class when the bell rang.
As I passed by Cole's desk, he gave me a smug look. "Are you only bringing me breakfast for one day, my dear girlfriend?"
I was pissed, but I couldn't retort.
I pinched my palm and plastered on a smile. "Of course not."
He shot me a grin. "Nicole, I'd better see another love letter on my desk tomorrow. You've been consistent for a month, you can't just bail now."
People who came to me all had their own requests. A lot of them didn't want their names anywhere on the letters. Tessa was one of them.
I had thought that I would be able to stop writing love letters for other people once I landed this simp gig. After all, coming up with all those letters was a hassle and a total time sink.
