Chapter 2
After I tucked away the miscarriage paperwork, I went home.
David was there alone. Vera was out.
Now that I had a second chance, I wanted to destroy David for what he'd done.
When I walked in, David wrapped his arms around my waist like always, like a devoted husband.
I smiled softly, "Where's Vera? I have great news for both of you."
David's face flickered with worry. "Lily caught a cold. Mom took her to the doctor."
Lily was my three-year-old sister-in-law.
When David and I were dating, Vera disappeared for a while.
Later, I learned she'd been in postpartum recovery after having Lily.
It bothered me, but Vera said her family struggled with money when she was young.
After having David, she'd had an abortion because they couldn't afford another child—something she regretted her whole life.
As a woman, I could totally empathize with her feelings.
So I didn't press further.
But now I knew the truth—Lily didn't have a cold. She had leukemia.
I put on a concerned face and offered to visit Lily at the hospital.
David looked panicked. "It's just a cold. No need."
He must've known the truth all along.
David changed the subject quickly. "So what's the news?"
Playing coy, I pulled out the lab report.
He snatched it from me, eyes lighting up with excitement.
It was exactly like in my past life.
David's hands shook; tears welled in his eyes. "Emma, you're... you're pregnant!"
"Yes," I said shyly.
David hugged me tight and spun me around, grinning. Then he quickly let go. "Careful, we don't want to hurt the baby."
In my past life, I fell for this act completely. I decided to have his child because he looked so tender.
But now I knew—his excitement was only because Lily could finally be saved.
I couldn't wait to see their faces when they learned the truth.
"I've been feeling nauseous," I said, lounging on the couch. "And I have a feeling. It's a boy."
David stopped, looking uneasy—almost conflicted.
Then he quickly said he'd go get me snacks.
As soon as he left, I set up surveillance cameras throughout the house.
Then I called a junk dealer and sold everything in Lily's room for cheap.
This place was mine.
My parents bought it for me when I got married, worried I'd be mistreated.
After the wedding, Vera moved in with Lily uninvited.
She even made Lily her own room, turning it into a kid's paradise.
That evening, David and Vera came home together.
Vera looked exhausted, like she'd aged ten years. Lily's illness had clearly devastated her.
I twisted the knife. "Where's Lily?"
Vera forced a smile. "Since you're pregnant, I didn't want Lily to get you sick. I sent her to stay with relatives."
Obviously, she was stuck in the hospital.
I ignored the desperate gleam in Vera's eyes as she stared at my belly. I just went to my room.
Minutes later, Vera's shrill scream echoed through the hallway.
The door slammed open.
Vera stormed in. "Where's everything from Lily's room?"
"I cleared it out. Now that I'm pregnant, we need that room for the baby."
Shocked by my defiance, Vera staggered. She pointed a trembling finger at me, screaming, "You're insane! That baby's not even born yet!"
"My parents bought this house for me. I'll do what I want with it."
Vera's face turned bright red with rage, but she couldn't say anything.
David, who'd been pretending not to notice in the living room, finally walked over.
He gave me a disapproving look.
Before he could say anything, I clutched my belly and grimaced.
"Ow, my stomach hurts. Did I upset the baby?"
David and Vera panicked. They quickly helped me lie down, then left the room.
Once they were gone, I checked my phone and listened to them arguing through the surveillance system.
"Mom, you know how hard it was for her to get pregnant. Can't you just let her do what she wants?" David said.
Vera cried. "I've been running around all day for your kid!
"If you hadn't insisted on being with that broke nurse and having a baby with her, would I be dealing with this?"
Her words hit me like a thunderclap.
My hands and feet went cold. My heart pounded.
No wonder in my past life, David worked with Vera to get rid of my baby—and when the truth came out, he didn't hesitate to push me off that roof.
Lily was his daughter all along.
Before they could finish arguing, I walked out and interrupted them.
"I've been thinking... We can't keep this baby. David and I just started making progress at work, and we have no savings," I said.
David's face instantly went pale.
"Honey, this baby is proof of our love!" David blurted out, just like in my past life.
I pretended to struggle, then nodded reluctantly.
"Everyone says pregnant women get insecure. Why don't you give me your salary card?" I said with a little pout.
David hesitated, but I teared up immediately. "You can't even do that? I'm only doing this for the baby."
He gritted his teeth and handed over the card.
Vera clearly hated seeing the card go into my pocket, but she couldn't do anything.
Let them panic. The baby I was carrying was their lifeline now.
Just then, Vera's phone rang.
She quickly stepped away to answer, and when she came back, she looked anxious. "My card group just called. I'm going!"
David rushed to drive her, and they hurried out together.
Card group? Bullshit. That was no coincidence. That was exactly when Lily started getting worse.
That call was definitely from the hospital.
I transferred a few thousand dollars from David's card to mine, bought health supplements, and sent money to my parents.
In my past life, I died young. Within a year, their health fell apart. This time, I'd take care of them and make sure they lived long, happy lives.
Then, I contacted a real estate agent and listed my apartment for sale.
