Chapter 7
Chapter Seven: A Dangerous Partnership
The knock came at 9 PM.
Scarlett was still in her office, surrounded by the wreckage of her certainty, wearing the same clothes she had put on that morning, her hair pulled back in a severe bun, her eyes red from reading documents that rewrote her history.
She opened the door.
Adrian King stood in the hallway.
He had changed into a black turtleneck and charcoal trousers, the casual attire somehow more intimidating than any suit. His eyes were tired. His jaw was tight. He looked like a man who had not slept in days.
"You read the dossier," he said. It was not a question.
"I read it."
"And?"
"And I don't know what to believe."
"Then believe this." He stepped into her office without waiting for an invitation. He walked to the window and stood where she had stood, looking out at the city. "Mendoza Capital is not a consortium. It is a criminal organization with ties to every dirty industry on this continent. They owned your father. They own three members of your board. And they are coming for Hayes Collective because your European expansion threatens one of their money laundering fronts in Milan."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Because I'm the only person who has told you the truth."
Scarlett closed the door. She leaned against it, watching him. He was so still, so controlled, but she could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands clenched and unclenched at his sides.
"You destroyed my father's life."
"I saved your father's life. He was going to die, Scarlett. Mendoza had already ordered it. The only way to stop them was to make his company worthless. To take away their leverage."
"Why didn't you tell him?"
"Because Mendoza has ears everywhere. If Charles had known, he would have reacted. He would have panicked. And Mendoza would have killed him before I could finish the dismantling." Adrian turned to her. His eyes were raw. Open. Nothing like the cold steel she had seen at her party. "I let him hate me. I let the world hate me. Because the alternative was watching him die."
"And now?"
"And now Mendoza is coming for you. They know your European expansion will expose their Milan operation. They want Hayes Collective under their control before that happens. And they are using my acquisition offer as cover."
Scarlett pushed off the door. She walked toward him. Close enough to smell that dark, dangerous cologne. Close enough to see the truth in his eyes.
"What do you want from me, Adrian?"
"I want you to partner with me."
"Partner?"
"A temporary alliance. We combine our resources. We expose Mendoza's presence in Hayes Collective. We purge your board. And when it's over, I walk away. You keep your company. Your independence. Your victory."
"Why would you walk away?"
Adrian was silent for a long moment. The city lights painted his face in blue and gold, and he looked, for the first time, like a man carrying a weight too heavy for his shoulders.
"Because I don't want your company, Scarlett. I never did."
"Then what do you want?"
He turned fully to face her. His eyes met hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. He reached out, slowly, giving her time to pull away, and touched her cheek. His fingers were warm. Rough. Calloused in a way that surprised her for a billionaire.
"I want you to be safe." His voice was barely above a whisper. "I want you to win. I want to watch you become the woman you were meant to be, without Mendoza or anyone else standing in your way. And I want..." He stopped. His jaw tightened. "I want things I have no right to want."
Scarlett's heart hammered against her ribs. She should step back. She should push his hand away. She should remember that this man had destroyed her family, had haunted her dreams, had become the symbol of everything she hated.
But she didn't move.
"What things?"
Adrian's thumb brushed her lower lip. The touch sent a shiver down her spine, a spark of heat that pooled in her core despite every warning bell screaming in her mind.
"Things that would terrify you," he said. "Things that would make you run."
"I'm not running."
"You should."
"Make me."
The challenge hung between them. Adrian's eyes darkened. His hand slid from her cheek to her jaw, tilting her face up toward his. For a moment, she thought he would kiss her. She thought she would let him. The air between them was charged with something dangerous and electric, a current that made her skin tingle and her knees weaken.
But he didn't kiss her. He stepped back. His hand dropped. The mask slid back into place.
"Partners," he said, his voice controlled again. "For now. I'll have my lawyers draft the agreement."
He turned and walked to the door. He paused with his hand on the handle.
"And Scarlett?"
"Yes?"
"Burn the dossier. Mendoza can't know you've seen it. If they realize you know the truth, they won't bother with board votes. They'll just kill you."
He left.
Scarlett stood alone in her office, her fingers pressed to her lips where his thumb had touched, and realized that the war she had been preparing to fight was nothing like the battle she was about to face.
