Chapter 7
After that, everything else would be much easier. Margaret wasted no time.
That afternoon, the Johnson family's best lawyers showed up in the hospital ward. They brought all the documents, such as divorce papers, property transfer agreements, and a non-disclosure agreement.
I sat beside Margaret's bed, reviewing every piece.
When I got to the asset list, my lawyer whispered beside me, "Ms. Sterling, according to our investigation, there's almost 10 million dollars in an overseas trust account belonging to Mr. Johnson.
"The funds were moved out a week ago. That money's most likely out of reach."
I looked up at Margaret.
Her eyes flashed with a sharp glint. "10 million dollars? Isn't that great? Justin made sure to set up his escape route earlier."
Margaret turned to me. "Nina, what about that money?"
I shook my head, keeping my cool. "Margaret, there's no rush about the money. I know where Justin stashed it."
All the lawyers in the room were stunned by my words.
Margaret stared at me, a bit surprised.
I took out my phone and pulled up a photo.
In the picture, there was a young guy, looking all smug, with the VIP room of a Riverdale casino in the background.
"This is Peter White, Vivian's younger brother," I said. "He's a hopeless gambler and owes millions of dollars to Riverdale casinos. Justin moved that money to pay off Peter's debts. Then he and Vivian could skip town."
I had collected all the info in advance. From the moment I suspected Justin was cheating, I hired a private investigator and had Vivian's entire family checked out from top to bottom.
Margaret laughed coldly as she looked at the photo. "So that's the loser we're dealing with."
Her lawyer frowned. "The money's sitting in an overseas casino account. Legally, it's almost impossible to get it back."
"Who said anything about going through the legal system?" I looked at Margaret and spoke slowly. "Margaret, didn't you mention you have some business friends over in Harborville?"
Margaret's eyes lit up right away. She caught on immediately. When we were up against crooks, we should play by their rules.
She picked up her phone and dialed a number.
When the call connected, she spoke in Harborville's local language. Her tone was flat but carried an unmistakable command. "Tommy, find someone for me. His name is Peter White.
"Tell him his sister owes the Johnson family something, and I want every cent, with interest, paid back to me."
Margaret made the call, and things happened fast. Less than twenty-four hours later, her lawyer called me. "Ms. Sterling, news came in from Harborville. Peter has been 'invited' for coffee by Tommy's crew. He was super cooperative and spilled everything he knew."
I was sitting on the balcony of my new apartment, soaking up the sun.
This was the priciest river-view penthouse Justin owned, and it ended up in the divorce settlement. It was officially mine.
"What did Peter say?" I asked calmly.
Margaret's lawyer replied, "He said Justin moved 10 million dollars. 7 million went to pay off his gambling debts.
"Justin told him to stash the other 3 million in an offshore anonymous account, and the password is known only to Justin and Vivian. That's their getaway money.
"There's one more thing." The lawyer paused. "Peter dropped something crucial. He said Vivian's baby isn't Justin's."
My hand suddenly clenched tight around my phone.
Although I'd seen it coming, hearing it for real still made me feel disgusted. "Whose is it?"
"It's Peter's." The lawyer sounded shocked. "Peter said he and Vivian aren't bound by blood. They grew up together in an orphanage and then got adopted by the same family. They're only siblings on paper.
"They've been lovers all along. Vivian cozying up to Justin was nothing but a setup from the start. All they wanted was the Johnson family's money."
This was a carefully planned scam. Justin, the idiot, got tricked and was still caring about Peter and Vivian.
He was even ready to sacrifice his own baby for someone else's bastard. What a cruel irony.
"Got it." I hung up, my gaze icy.
Vivian's last lifeline was gone.

That afternoon, I went to the basement where Justin and Vivian were being held. After two days, they were already gaunt, looking like a total mess.
When Justin saw me, his eyes were bloodshot and full of hatred. "Nina, you bitch. Go to hell."
