When I woke up again, I was lying in an observation room at the hospital.

The ER doctor had already debrided the wound on my residual limb, started me on IV antibiotics, and contacted the prosthetics clinic.

Lily was sitting by the bed, her eyes red from crying.

Seeing me open my eyes, she immediately threw herself forward and carefully took my hand.

"Evie, you're finally awake."

"You had a fever all night. I was too scared to close my eyes."

"I was so scared of losing you."

Tears welled up in my own eyes, but I smiled to comfort…
