Chapter 1
The soft morning light filtered through the nursery curtains, casting a golden glow over my sleeping son's face. My heart swelled with a love so profound it nearly brought tears to my eyes. After three agonizing years of trying, of monthly disappointments and whispered prayers to the Moon Goddess, he was finally here—my miracle, my little Alexander.
"There you go, my sweet boy," I whispered, gently adjusting the soft blue blanket around his tiny form. His eyelids fluttered at the sound of my voice, revealing eyes that would one day shift to the amber of his wolf. For now, they remained newborn blue, innocent and trusting.
My fingers traced the delicate curve of his cheek. Just two days home from the pack healer's facility, and already I couldn't imagine life without him. The pain of childbirth seemed a distant memory compared to this overwhelming joy.
My wolf, Aria, purred contentedly within me. *Our pup. Our beautiful, perfect pup.*
The nursery door swung open without warning. I looked up, expecting to see the omega nursemaid bringing the morning bottle. Instead, Marcus filled the doorway, his broad shoulders blocking the light from the hallway. My mate, my Alpha, the father of my child—yet something in his expression sent an involuntary shiver down my spine.
"Claire." His voice was cool, businesslike. No trace of the tenderness one might expect from a new father.
And then I noticed her standing slightly behind him—Rachel Davis, my supposed best friend. The woman who had held my hand through every failed pregnancy test, who had promised to be there for me always.
Why was she here? And why was she looking at my son with such... hunger in her eyes?
"I've been thinking," Marcus continued, stepping further into the nursery. His Alpha aura pulsed around him, commanding and intimidating. "About what's best for the pack. For our future."
Rachel moved to stand beside him, her shoulder nearly touching his in a familiarity that made my stomach twist. She wore her dark hair loose today, cascading over shoulders draped in an expensive silk blouse I'd never seen before.
"What do you mean?" I asked, instinctively tightening my hold on Alexander.
Marcus's jaw tightened, that familiar sign of impatience I'd learned to dread. "The pack needs a Luna who can focus entirely on her duties. A newborn requires constant attention—attention you should be directing toward the pack."
"I can manage both," I said, confusion clouding my thoughts. "Many Lunas have children and—"
"I've made a decision," he cut me off, his tone sliding into that authoritative Alpha voice that brooked no argument. "Rachel will raise the pup."
The world stopped. My lungs refused to work. I stared at him, certain I had misheard.
"It's for the best, Claire," Rachel said softly, stepping forward with outstretched arms. "For the good of the pack. I'll love him like my own, I promise."
Aria howled in primal agony, clawing at my insides. *NO! OUR PUP! OURS!*
"You can't be serious," I whispered, backing away until I felt the crib against my legs. "He's my son. Our son, Marcus."
"It's not a request, Claire." Marcus's eyes hardened, cold as winter frost. "It's what's happening. Rachel has agreed to take on this responsibility while you focus on your Luna duties."
Rachel's smile didn't reach her eyes as she took another step toward me. "I'll take good care of him, Claire. You know I will."
In that moment, looking between them—Marcus's impassive face and Rachel's barely concealed triumph—something inside me shattered. The pieces fell away, revealing a truth I had been blind to for too long.
This wasn't about the pack. This wasn't about my duties.
My fingers trembled as I clutched Alexander closer to my chest. His tiny body warm against my thundering heart. Without taking my eyes off them, I reached for the thin thread of the mind-link that connected me to my brother hundreds of miles away.
*Derek!* I called silently, my mental voice breaking with desperation. *Help me! Marcus is trying to take my baby away! He wants to give him to Rachel!*
I felt my brother's immediate shock, then his fury erupting across the link.
*Claire? What the hell is happening?*
*Please,* I begged, tears streaming down my face as Marcus took a threatening step forward. *I need you. I'm leaving him, Derek. I'm never letting him take my son.*
As Marcus reached for my child, Aria surged forward with protective rage, my eyes flashing gold with her presence.
"Touch him," I growled, "and it will be the last thing you ever do."
