Chapter 1
The grand throne hall stretched before me like a golden cathedral, its vaulted ceilings disappearing into shadows that seemed to mock the brilliance below. Hundreds of pack leaders and nobles filled the ornate space, their voices creating a low hum of anticipation that vibrated through my bones. I stood at Magnus's side, my spine straight and hands clasped before me, every inch the dignified Luna I had been trained to be.
The weight of tradition pressed down on me as heavily as the ceremonial crown that would soon rest upon my mate's head. Nine years. Nine years of standing in this very position, of enduring his cold indifference, of watching him lavish attention on everyone but me. Today was supposed to change everything. Today, I would finally become what I was born to be—the Lycan Queen.
Magnus's presence beside me radiated power and authority, his massive frame commanding attention even in stillness. The ceremonial robes of deep crimson and gold made him look every inch the king he was about to become. But when I glanced at him, searching for even a flicker of shared excitement, his dark eyes remained fixed ahead, his jaw set in that familiar line of barely concealed impatience.
The High Elder's voice boomed across the hall, reciting the ancient words that would bind Magnus to the throne. "By the will of the Moon Goddess and the sacred laws of our kind, I crown you Magnus Reynolds, Lycan King of the North American territories."
The golden crown settled onto his head with a finality that should have filled me with pride. Instead, a strange chill crept up my spine as Magnus turned to face the assembled court. This was it—the moment when he would acknowledge me as his Queen, when our bond would be consecrated before the entire kingdom.
"My loyal subjects," Magnus's voice carried easily through the hall, commanding absolute silence. "Today marks not just my ascension to the throne, but the dawn of a new era for our kingdom."
I felt the collective breath of the court, waiting. My heart hammered against my ribs as I prepared to step forward, to accept the crown that was rightfully mine.
"It is with great honor that I present to you my chosen Luna, who will stand beside me as we forge our kingdom's future."
The words hit me like ice water. Chosen Luna. Not fated mate. Not Queen. The distinction was subtle but devastating, and every wolf in the room understood its implications.
Magnus's hand extended, but not toward me.
Lilliana Scott emerged from the crowd like a vision in silver silk, her golden hair catching the light as she glided forward with practiced grace. The smile on her lips was radiant, triumphant, and when her eyes met mine for the briefest moment, I saw the victory burning there.
"Lilliana Scott," Magnus continued, his voice warm in a way it had never been when speaking my name, "daughter of Alpha Scott of the Western Territories, will serve as Luna of the Lycan Kingdom."
The world tilted. Sound became muffled, as if I were underwater. I watched, frozen, as Lilliana took her place beside Magnus—my place—and accepted the silver circlet that should have been mine. The court erupted in polite applause, but all I could hear was the roaring in my ears.
My mate mark began to burn. The sacred symbol on my neck, the physical manifestation of our bond, grew hot and then cold, its silver glow visibly dimming as Magnus's rejection coursed through our connection. Gasps rippled through the crowd as they witnessed the unprecedented sight—a fated mate being publicly cast aside.
Lilliana's smirk was subtle, hidden behind her mask of regal composure, but I caught it. That small, satisfied curve of her lips that said everything: I won. You lost. This was always meant to be mine.
I remained standing where Magnus had left me, abandoned in front of hundreds of witnesses, my hands trembling so violently I had to clasp them tighter to hide my distress. The ceremonial gown I wore—deep blue silk that had been chosen to complement the crown I would never receive—suddenly felt like a costume, a cruel joke.
The High Elder's voice continued with the traditional blessings, but the words blurred together. I forced myself to breathe, to maintain some shred of dignity even as my world crumbled around me. Nine years of loyalty, of enduring his coldness, of believing that duty and patience would eventually be rewarded—all of it had been for nothing.
As the ceremony concluded and the court began to disperse, Magnus didn't even glance in my direction. He was already deep in conversation with Lilliana, his hand resting possessively on her waist as they accepted congratulations from the pack leaders.
I stood alone in the emptying throne hall, the dying light from the stained glass windows casting long shadows across the marble floor. The crown I had dreamed of wearing gleamed mockingly from Lilliana's head, and I finally understood the truth that had been staring me in the face for nine long years.
I had never been his choice. I had only ever been his obligation.
