Chapter 1
The soft glow of dawn filtered through the stained-glass windows of the Sterling Pack hall, casting rainbow patterns across the polished wooden floors where our pack had gathered. Today was supposed to be special—Emma's third birthday and her Coming-of-Age Ceremony. My heart swelled with maternal pride as I watched my daughter twirl in her silver ceremonial dress, her dark curls bouncing with each movement.
"Mommy, when will my wolf come?" Emma tugged at my hand, her silver-flecked eyes—so like mine—wide with excitement.
"Soon, sweetheart," I whispered, smoothing her dress. "The Moon Goddess decides when your wolf is ready."
I glanced at the ornate Alpha chair positioned at the center of the ceremonial circle, draped with the Sterling Pack's royal blue banners. Ryan's absence hung in the air like a storm cloud. He'd promised to be here at dawn. He'd sworn on our mate bond.
My wolf, Grace, whimpered inside me. *He's not coming. Again.*
"Luna Victoria," Beta Mark Jennings approached, his face carefully blank. "Perhaps we should begin without—"
The heavy oak doors crashed open. My breath caught as Ryan stumbled in, flanked by Mark and our Gamma, Jason. The sickening scent hit me before I could process the sight—whiskey, sweat, and the unmistakable floral perfume that clung to him like a second skin. Madison Cooper's scent.
Grace howled in agony through our mind-link, the pain so sharp I nearly doubled over. *Betrayal. Mate betrayal.*
"Daddy!" Emma called out, her innocent voice slicing through the stunned silence.
Ryan's bloodshot eyes barely registered her. His normally immaculate appearance was disheveled—shirt partially unbuttoned, hair mussed as if by eager fingers. Mark gripped his elbow, steadying him as he swayed. Jason quickly draped a ceremonial cloak over Ryan's shoulders, a pathetic attempt to mask what everyone could smell.
"Let's get this over with," Ryan slurred, collapsing into his ceremonial chair with none of the dignity an Alpha should possess during his daughter's sacred ceremony.
The pack members averted their eyes, shame and secondhand embarrassment rolling off them in waves. No one dared speak. The only sound was the erratic drip of melted candle wax hitting the stone floor.
I rushed to Emma's side, kneeling to shield her from the spectacle her father had become. Her small fingers traced the silver flecks in my hair—the mark of my lineage from the Silver Moon Pack. Though her ceremonial fur remained untouched, I could feel her confusion, the first seeds of betrayal taking root in her young mind.
"Why does Daddy smell funny?" she whispered against my neck.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Daddy's just tired from his trip, sweetheart."
The lie tasted bitter on my tongue. Five years of lies, of excuses, of watching my mate drift further away while I clung desperately to the memory of what we once had.
Wordless shame hung heavy over the hall as the ceremony proceeded, hollow and mechanical. Ryan remained slumped in his chair, occasionally mumbling incoherently. Not once did he look at Emma.

The next morning, I stood at the head of the council table, my back straight despite the weight crushing my chest. The council members—all Ryan's loyal followers—sat in uncomfortable silence as I delivered the words I'd spoken eight times before.
"I, Victoria Sterling, Luna of the Sterling Pack, reject you, Ryan Sterling, as my mate." My voice didn't waver this time. The desperation that had colored my previous threats had crystallized into something harder, colder.
Ryan looked up from his coffee, dark circles under his eyes, his handsome face twisted into a familiar sneer. His Alpha aura pressed against my chest like a physical force.
"Are we doing this again, Victoria?" He sighed dramatically. "Council dismissed."
No one moved. They were waiting—waiting for me to back down, to crumble, to retreat to my quarters in tears as I had done before.
Then it happened. The pack mind-link, usually a sacred connection between pack members, erupted with cruel laughter. Thoughts not meant for me to hear crashed through my consciousness:
*All bark, no bite!*
*Nine times the charm?*
*She's such a desperate Luna...*
*Poor pathetic Victoria...*
My knees buckled under the weight of their mockery. As I gripped the edge of the table to steady myself, I caught Ryan's smirk. He knew. He'd left the mind-link open deliberately, allowing me to hear exactly what the pack thought of their Luna.
In that moment, something inside me—something I thought had died years ago—sparked to life. The last thread of hope snapped, and with it, the last of my restraint.
As I straightened my spine and met Ryan's gaze, I didn't recognize the cold fury in my own eyes reflected in his surprised expression. This time would be different. This time, I would bite.
