Chapter 4
4.4|| Severing The Thread
I look at Kaelen. Truly look at him. I see the stubborn set of his jaw, the arrogant belief that because he is my mate, I will eventually bow, cry, and accept his scrap of pity.
He truly believes that after my anger fades, I will crawl back to him, accept the position of a subordinate guardian, and dutifully help him run the pack while my stepsister reaps the rewards of my blood and sweat.
So, I refuse to accept this.
"No," I say.
Kaelen frowns, his eyes narrowing as if I have spoken in a foreign tongue. "What did you say?"
"I reject you."
The air instantly turns frigid. The wind seems to die down, freezing the very breath in our lungs. Elara gasps, her hands flying to her mouth as she takes a hurried step back, her eyes wide with sudden terror.
Kaelen’s eyes widen in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
"Celeste, stop this temper tantrum—"
"I, Celeste Vance, reject you, Alpha Kaelen of the Silver Crest Pack, as my mate and my future Luna partner," I speak clearly, my voice echoing across the quiet training grounds. The ancient, sacred words vibrate with immediate, raw power, resonating deep within the earth beneath our feet. "I sever the bond. I reclaim my soul."
A golden light, thin as a thread but burning with the brilliance of a dying star, appears between our chests, stretching taut in the dim morning air. It is the physical manifestation of the sacred bond that tied our souls together.
With a sharp, violent pull of my mind, I snap it.
An agonizing gasp tears from Kaelen's throat as he stumbles backward, clutching his chest. The mate-bond shatter-shock hits him like a physical blow to the sternum.
I feel the phantom pain of the severing—a blinding, white-hot tear that slices through my spirit, followed by a cold, yawning emptiness in my chest. It feels as though a piece of my very soul has been ripped out by the roots.
But I refuse to double over. I refuse to let them see me flinch.
I stand tall, my chin held high and my shoulders squared, as my ex-mate drops to his knees in the wet mud.
"Celeste... what have you done?" Kaelen groans, his voice strained and raspy. His face turns a sickening, pale shade of gray as cold sweat breaks out across his forehead. He clutches at the grass, his claws digging deep into the earth as he fights to draw breath.
The rejection of a mate bond is a sacred, violent act. It is not a mere disagreement, it tears at the very fabric of a werewolf's soul, leaving a raw, bleeding wound where the divine connection once lived.
For an Alpha, the pain is doubled, as the pack magic itself—inextricably tied to the Alpha's soul—reacts to the sudden, violent instability of its leader. Around the clearing, the distant warriors groan, clutching their heads as the shockwave of Kaelen's agony ripples through the pack link.
"I freed myself," I say, looking down at him without a single ounce of pity.
The snapped golden thread dissolves into nothingness, the glittering, dying particles falling like useless ash into the dirt around his trembling knees.
"You wanted a weak Luna, Kaelen," I continue, my voice steady and unwavering. "You wanted someone you could control, someone who would look to you for every breath, grateful for whatever crumbs you decided to throw her way. Well, now you have Elara. Enjoy your prize."
I will not be the stepping stone for a weak man who thinks he can eat his cake and have it too. He wanted my strength to guard his borders, and her weakness to flatter his ego. He cannot have both.
"You're crazy!" Elara shrieks, her fragile facade entirely vanishing as panic takes over. She rushes to Kaelen's side, dropping her expensive silk gown directly into the mud.
She tries desperately to help him stand, but he is too heavy, his large frame trembling violently from the spiritual shock. "Kaelen! Oh my goddess, Kaelen, are you okay? Someone call the pack doctor! Fast!"
"He doesn't need a doctor, Elara," I say, my voice cold as ice. "He needs to learn that actions have consequences. He made his choice and I have simply made mine."
I look down at the golden admission letter still clutched in my hand. It is slightly crumpled now, the silver wax seal cracked. With a slow, deliberate movement, I let my fingers unravel.
I drop the parchment onto the muddy ground, right in front of Kaelen's face. It lands with a soft splash in a puddle, the water slowly seeping into the edges of the royal gold paper.
"You can keep the paper," I say, staring down at the man I once would have died for. "But you will never have my loyalty again."
I turn on my heel and walk away, my heavy leather boots splashing through the puddles. I do not look back.
Behind me, the chaotic sounds of the clearing fade. I can hear Elara screaming hysterically for help, her voice cracking with terror, and Kaelen's ragged, painful breathing as he struggles to master the agony of his newly emptied soul.
With every step I take away from the training grounds, my chest feels like it has been hollowed out with a rusty knife. The emptiness is vast, cold, and terrifying.
The silence in my mind where Kaelen's presence used to reside is deafening. The pain threatens to tear me apart.
But beneath the agonizing pain, for the first time in my life, I feel a strange, sharp, and exhilarating sense of absolute freedom. The heavy chains of expectation, duty, and a compromised love have been shattered.
I am no longer Celeste, the future Luna of Silver Crest. I am just Celeste Hart… and that is more than enough.
For now.
