Chapter 1
The morning sun streamed through our bedroom windows as I carefully arranged the moonstone necklace in its velvet box, my fingers trembling with excitement. Three years. Three years since Bradley had marked me as his mate, since the Moon Goddess had blessed us with the sacred bond that was supposed to last forever.
"Special plans today?" Bradley's voice came from behind me, deep and rough with sleep. I turned to find him watching me from the doorway, his dark hair tousled, those green eyes that had captured my heart still heavy with drowsiness.
"It's our anniversary," I said softly, holding up the necklace. "I thought... I thought we could have a private ceremony tonight. Just us."
Something flickered across his face—was it guilt? But it was gone so quickly I convinced myself I'd imagined it. He crossed the room and pulled me into his arms, his familiar scent of pine and earth wrapping around me like a security blanket.
"About tonight, Hazel..." His voice carried a strange tension. "There's urgent pack business at the neutral territory. Border disputes with the Crescent Pack. I need to handle it personally."
My heart sank, but I forced a smile. "On our anniversary?"
"I'll be back by evening," he promised, pressing a kiss to my forehead. "We'll have our ceremony then. I swear it."
I wanted to believe him. I always wanted to believe him.
The day dragged by in a haze of preparation. I spent hours in the kitchen, preparing Bradley's favorite dishes—rosemary lamb, honey-glazed carrots, the chocolate cake I'd learned to make just for him. The entire packhouse smelled like celebration, but the emptiness in my chest grew with each passing hour.
By afternoon, my wolf began to pace restlessly within me, her agitation bleeding into my consciousness like spilled ink. *Something's wrong,* she whispered, her voice sharp with unease. *We need to find our mate.*
"He's handling pack business," I murmured aloud, trying to soothe both of us. "He'll be home soon."
But my wolf's distress only intensified. She clawed at my mind, desperate and frantic in a way I'd never experienced. The bond between Bradley and me felt... different. Muted somehow, as if something was interfering with our connection.
*Find him,* my wolf demanded. *Now.*
I tried to resist, but the compulsion was overwhelming. My hands shook as I grabbed my keys, my wolf's instincts guiding me toward the neutral territory like a magnetic pull I couldn't ignore.
The drive felt endless and instantaneous all at once. My heart hammered against my ribs as I parked at the edge of the clearing where pack meetings were typically held. The scent hit me first—Bradley's familiar pine, but twisted with something floral and cloying. Something that didn't belong.
I crept through the trees, my wolf's senses heightened to painful clarity. And then I saw them.
Bradley stood in the center of the clearing, but he wasn't alone. Celia Shaw—his childhood friend, the she-wolf who'd been struggling with "late bloomer" issues—was pressed against him, her arms wound around his neck. They weren't discussing border disputes or pack business.
They were kissing.
Not the gentle, respectful kiss of friends offering comfort. This was passionate, desperate, intimate. Bradley's hands tangled in her blonde hair, pulling her closer as she melted against him. The sight hit me like a physical blow, stealing the air from my lungs.
But what shattered me completely was what she was wearing around her neck.
My anniversary gift. The moonstone necklace I'd carefully chosen, the one Bradley had claimed to have lost just last week. It caught the late afternoon sunlight as Celia tilted her head back, laughing at something he whispered against her ear.
The world tilted sideways. My knees hit the forest floor as a wave of nausea crashed over me, but it wasn't just from the betrayal. Something else was happening—something impossible and wonderful and devastating all at once.
My wolf's frantic energy suddenly made sense. The restlessness, the heightened senses, the strange pull in my abdomen I'd been attributing to anniversary nerves.
*Pregnant,* my wolf whispered, her voice filled with both joy and anguish. *We're carrying his pup.*
The timing was cruel beyond measure. In the same moment I discovered my mate's betrayal, my body was telling me I carried his child. New life blooming even as my world crumbled around me.
I pressed my hand to my still-flat stomach, tears streaming down my face as Bradley and Celia continued their intimate embrace mere yards away. The sacred bond I'd treasured, the future I'd sacrificed my healing career for, the anniversary I'd spent the day preparing—all of it was a lie.
And now, with his child growing inside me, I had to decide what came next.
