Chapter 1
The healing chamber's warmth cradled my two-day-old daughter against my chest, her tiny fingers curled around mine in perfect trust. Elara's peaceful breathing was the only sound in the room until the door crashed open, shattering our bubble of serenity.
Marcus strode in, his broad shoulders tense beneath his tailored jacket. Behind him trailed Amanda, her pale face a mask of practiced suffering. My wolf, Silver, growled deep within me, sensing danger before my human mind could process it.
"Victoria." My mate's voice was ice, devoid of the tenderness one might expect from a new father. "We need to discuss something urgent."
I instinctively tightened my hold on Elara. "What is it?"
Marcus's eyes—once warm amber when we'd first felt our mate bond a decade ago—had hardened into something unrecognizable. "Amanda's wolf is dying. The healers have confirmed it."
I glanced at the woman who had haunted our mating from the beginning. Her golden hair fell in perfect waves around a face that radiated fragility. The childhood sweetheart who had abandoned Marcus, only to return when I had transformed him from a failing Alpha into one of the most powerful in North America.
"I'm sorry to hear that," I said carefully, though Silver snarled her disbelief. Something about Amanda's condition had never felt right to my wolf.
"There's only one solution." Marcus stepped closer, his Alpha aura pressing down on me like a physical weight. "You need to transfer your wolf's essence to Amanda."
The room tilted. "What?"
"Your wolf's essence," he repeated, as if I simply hadn't heard him rather than couldn't comprehend the monstrosity of his request. "Amanda needs it to survive."
"That's impossible." My voice emerged stronger than I felt. "A wolf essence transfer would kill me. It would leave Elara motherless."
Amanda's lip trembled, a perfect tear sliding down her cheek. "I didn't want to ask this of you, Victoria. But I'm dying."
"You're asking me to die in your place," I said, my shock giving way to anger. Silver's rage burned through my veins, lending me strength.
Marcus's eyes flashed red, his Alpha dominance flooding the room. "You would deny my chosen mate her life? After everything this pack has given you?"
I nearly laughed at the absurdity. "Everything the pack has given me? I built this pack from nothing! I saved it from financial ruin, from rogue attacks, from your inexperience!"
"You dare speak to your Alpha this way?" His voice dropped into the Alpha tone, a supernatural command that made lesser wolves cower.
I rose from the bed, cradling Elara against my shoulder. Ten years of suppressing my own strength, of playing the supportive Luna while he took credit for my strategies, my alliances, my sacrifices—it all crystallized into a single moment of defiance.
"I will not sacrifice my life—my daughter's mother—for your childhood sweetheart."
Marcus's face contorted with rage. "This is a direct violation of pack loyalty. Your selfishness will be remembered, Luna."
The title—once my pride—fell from his lips like an insult. Panic fluttered in my chest as I realized I was alone against my mate, my Alpha, and the pack I had built with my own hands.
In desperation, I closed my eyes and reached for the most powerful connection I knew. *Lycan King Gabriel Morrison, I, Luna Victoria Hayes of the Sterling Pack, humbly request your intervention. My mate demands my wolf's essence for another woman. Please...*
The mind-link stretched out, a fragile thread of hope—then snapped. Cold silence flooded my consciousness as the royal connection was deliberately, forcefully blocked. The rejection was like a slap, leaving me stunned and exposed.
Laughter rippled through the room. I hadn't noticed the gathering crowd of pack members at the door, witnessing my humiliation.
"Did you really think the Lycan King would answer to you?" Amanda's voice dripped with mockery, her fragile facade momentarily slipping.
"Our Luna thinks herself worthy of royal attention," sneered Caleb, Marcus's Beta and Amanda's most devoted supporter.
Shame burned through me as I stood alone, clutching my newborn, surrounded by the pack I had sacrificed everything for. Their faces—once respectful, even admiring—now twisted with contempt. Marcus's eyes held no recognition of our years together, only cold determination to save the woman he had always truly wanted.
In that moment, I knew with crystal clarity: the mate bond I had cherished for a decade was nothing but an illusion. And now, with a newborn in my arms and my authority stripped away, I faced an enemy I never expected—the very pack I had built with my heart's blood.
Silver howled within me, a sound of such primal rage and grief that I feared she might tear free from my skin. But her fury gave me strength. If Marcus wanted my wolf's essence, he would have to take it from my cold, dead body.
And I wasn't ready to die. Not while Elara needed me. Not while justice remained unserved.
