I snatched the phone back, my voice hoarse.

"How is Natalie?"

"Critical condition. Severe trauma to the head and abdomen. She's stable for now, but she might lose the baby. If it comes down to it, our priority is the mother. Do you understand?"

Hearing those words felt like a sledgehammer crushing my chest.

"The ambulance is bringing her in now. You're injured as well. You need to be examined."
