Chapter 3
Just when I was about to dance with Kyle, the strap on my dress suddenly snapped.
Worried I might have a wardrobe malfunction, Rosa quickly suggested we go change.
I nodded and followed her into the dressing room behind the venue.
But as soon as we stepped inside, I came face-to-face with the last person I ever wanted to run into again.
The moment I saw Lennon, I tried to bolt, but he caught my wrist.
"Sienna, why are you ignoring me? I gave up my chance to study abroad so I could come to Akatia Island and work as a doctor," he said.
I shot him a cold look and replied without mercy, "Why should I care that you gave up your spot? You want me to pat you on the back for that?"
Besides, that so-called study abroad offer was a total fake.
It was just a cover to keep up his act, and he used it to pick up girls left and right.
I didn't even bother to look at him and was about to leave.
But Lennon suddenly pulled me close by the waist and pressed a cloth hard over my mouth and nose.
My body felt like it was on fire, making me gasp for air.
Lennon seized the moment and buried his face in my neck, making me shudder all over.
Scenes from before flashed before my eyes, how he gave me a filthy disease and left me dying of hunger on the streets.
I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek, just barely keeping myself awake.
As soon as I regained a bit of clarity, I struggled with all my strength, trying to break free from his grip.
But faced with his overwhelming strength, my struggles were utterly powerless.
If anything, it only fueled his twisted amusement, and his cruel laughter rang in my ears.
An inexplicable despair swallowed me whole.
I couldn't hold back my tears. They slipped down my cheeks, helpless and silent.
The next second, the tightly shut door was kicked open.
A gunshot echoed through the room, and Lennon's grip on me finally loosened. I collapsed to the floor, completely drained.
Looking up, I found Kyle standing over me, his eyes cold and merciless.
He demanded, "What the hell are you two doing?
"I thought you finally understood, and that you wanted to build a life with me. It turns out..."
A mocking smile curled at his lips, but his icy stare stabbed right through me.
For a split second, I could almost see him looming over me, flinging the divorce papers at me and demanding my signature, just like before.
The overwhelming aura pouring off Kyle made my whole body shake uncontrollably.
But Lennon was still acting like a lunatic, practically begging for death.
With that dumb defiant look, he grabbed my hand and locked our fingers together.
He spoke up, throwing down a challenge like he was marking his territory.
He said, "General Miller, back then you used your rank to rip Sienna away from me. Now..."
The sound of a gun cocking cut Lennon off mid-sentence.
Kyle's eyes blazed red, staring at Lennon like he was already a corpse.
Lennon swallowed hard, instinctively taking a step back and trying to hide behind me.
His whole body shook as he stammered, "Now that I've finally got my shot, I'm not letting you..."
But before he could finish, a gunshot rang out.
Whatever courage Lennon had managed to muster completely evaporated.
He let go of my hand and scrambled back against the wall, clinging to it like a scared rat.
His eyes were frozen with fear, the terror almost tangible.
He let out a panicked, raspy shout. "Are you insane? Playing judge and jury on base. Aren't you afraid the higher-ups will deal with you?"
Kyle snorted with disdain, grabbed my arm, and hauled me, still stunned and shaken, out of the room.
Kyle sneered, "Deal with me? Go ahead and try. Let's see who actually dares to mess with me.
"And let's not forget, you tried to wreck my marriage and seduce a military officer's spouse. That will get you dragged out and shot in public."
"And one more thing," Kyle said, spinning the gun around his finger before popping out the magazine and flicking it onto the floor in front of Lennon. "It was empty the whole time."
Lennon's face went from pale to ashen in an instant.
Even with his legs still shaking, he just couldn't stop mouthing off.
"It's a fact you broke Sienna and me up. If it wasn't for you, I'd be the one with her now!" he shot back.
Kyle shot him a cold look, his retort instant and cutting.
Kyle shot back, "Do you need me to remind you, Dr. Pollard, how you ended up in this cushy spot?
"If my father-in-law hadn't been soft, you'd still be rotting away in that cowshed."
Lennon's eyes went wide, his jaw trembling so hard he could barely speak.
"H-How do you know about that?" he stammered.
This time, Kyle didn't even bother to answer him.
It was because I couldn't help myself. I nuzzled up to Kyle's arm, like a kitten waiting to be petted.
I was just like a cat, hoping he'd reach out and stroke me.
There was a fire blazing inside me, making me feel completely out of control.
Right then, Kyle was like a block of ice, and I clung to him, desperate for relief.
He was the only one who could put out the fire burning inside me.
My hands couldn't stop roaming all over him, my breath growing hot and heavy, full of desire.
Seeing me getting bolder by the second, Kyle just picked me up without warning.
He turned to his aide and ordered, "Lock down the news. Throw him in the interrogation room and find out how a nobody doctor managed to sneak all that in."
"Yes, sir!" the aide replied.
