Chapter 3
It turned out that as soon as Macy got back to the city, she started seeing the father of her baby, Billy, all the time.
At first, Billy wanted nothing to do with the baby.
But after going to a few prenatal checkups with Macy and seeing the baby, he started to soften up.
After all, Billy had been married for years without any kids. This baby was a miracle. Even if it meant getting divorced, it was worth it for the baby.
He made up his mind and went to confront his legal wife, Janice.
But Janice wasn't about to let that slide. She showed up at Macy's workplace, furious and ready to make a scene.
"Who the hell is Macy anyway? If you've got the nerve to steal my man, then why don't you just disappear for good?" Janice yelled.
Macy, feeling like her baby gave her all the confidence she needed, went straight to confront Janice.
"Steal your man? Don't make it sound so nasty. In a relationship, the one who isn't loved is the real outsider. You're out of the game now!" Macy snapped back.
Janice had never seen anyone so bold and shameless. Flying into a rage, she smacked Macy hard across the face several times, leaving her dazed.
Macy wasn't about to take that lying down. She lunged at Janice, and the two started scrapping right there.
Macy's boss heard the commotion and rushed downstairs, just in time to see Macy getting her hair pulled, shouting brazenly without a care.
"I got pregnant; that's what makes me special. You guys, it's your own fault you can't have kids and get dumped. You're just jealous of me!" Macy yelled.
Macy's boss had been shattered by her own husband's affair, a marriage that left her deeply scarred.
Hearing Macy's words, the boss was so furious she was grinding her teeth, about to step in—when Janice suddenly snapped back, her voice dripping with venom.
"Then go die with your baby!" Janice spat.
With that, Macy lost her balance and tumbled down the stairs.
Thankfully, after being rushed to the hospital, the baby somehow survived against all odds.
Nancy couldn't help but marvel at the whole thing.
"Seriously, she tumbled down the stairs and still managed to hold onto the pregnancy? That's wild," she said.
I smiled knowingly.
All those days I made sure Macy took her folic acid religiously really paid off.
Three times a day, no skipping. That baby was locked in tight—so tough, even if she tried to get rid of it, it wouldn't budge.
But as for Macy, keeping her job was going to be a real challenge now.
I went to visit Macy but ended up catching her and Billy in the middle of a heated argument.
"My boss just called and fired me. If you're not going to support me and the baby, are you just going to let your own kid go hungry?" Macy snapped.
Billy frowned, shooting a look of utter disgust at Macy's belly.
"Why don't you just get an abortion? Let's just end this and go our own ways," he said coldly.
Macy stared at Billy in disbelief, then yelled at the top of her lungs.
"Now you've had your fun, and you're just gonna pretend you don't know me? No way! Me and this baby aren't done with you yet," she shouted.
Billy, pissed off, yanked the cigarette from his mouth and chucked it right at Macy's face. She cried out in pain, clutching her face.
"Fine, keep coming for me. Janice already said, as long as I don't take a paternity test, this kid isn't mine," he snapped.
Macy went for a slap, furious and not holding back.
"Janice? Now you remember you have a wife, huh? Where was she when you were all over me, trying to get me into your bed?" Macy yelled.
Billy turned and stormed out, and Macy ran after him, but he was already out the door.
She turned around and caught me enjoying the show, giving me a wary look.
"Katelyn, what are you doing here? Here to watch me make a fool of myself?" she snapped.
I flashed a cheeky grin at her.
"Didn't you say I was a hen that couldn't lay eggs? Thought I'd come see what a real egg-laying hen looks like in action," I shot back.
The moment I stepped out of the hospital, I called Leila.
When Leila found out what Macy had pulled, she totally blew her top. She stormed into the city and really let Macy have it.
But after she calmed down, Leila marched straight to Billy's office and caused a huge scene.
When Billy came back, he looked frantic and pissed off.
"Are you two trying to destroy me? You lost your job, and now you want me to lose mine too?" he shouted.
Macy just sat there, sobbing uncontrollably, while Leila stormed over, grabbed Billy by the hair, and started yanking and shouting at him.
"You ruined my good, pure girl, and now you think you can just walk away? You better take responsibility!" Leila yelled.
Billy just stood his ground, chin up, not backing down. "So what if she's pregnant? Just get rid of it."
Leila switched gears and started lecturing about how important having kids was, just like she always did with me.
Leila said, "Do you have any idea how precious a child is? Without kids, how would society even function? What future would our country have? If you dare get rid of that baby, it's a crime against nature—"
But halfway through her tirade, Leila suddenly bolted out of the room and puked her guts out, making a dramatic scene.
I was watching from the sidelines, cracking up so hard I nearly fell over.
For Leila, this was truly a case of two blessings arriving at once.
