When we got outside, the sunlight was harsh. I let go of Jesse's hand and realized my palm was a little sweaty.

Jesse let go, too, his fingers curling slightly. He asked softly, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I said, shaking my head. I actually felt relieved, like I'd finally shed a burden I'd been carrying for ages. "Thanks for what you did back there."

"It's okay," he said after a pause. "I was only telling the truth."
