The safe’s lockout alarm shrieked before Preston could touch the switch.

He released me on instinct.

At the same moment, someone began pounding on the studio’s front door. The security company was calling through the speaker, demanding a response.

Preston stared at the flashing red panel, then at the granite weight in my hand.

For the first time, he understood that I was no longer going to stand still and let him destroy me.

He backed away.

“Fix the transfer,” he said. “Tonight.”

Then he left before security reached the back office.
