On the day my granddaughter was born, the woman my husband almost married made her welcome quilt. I was two miles away finishing one for a girl who came eight weeks early. He said somebody had to, and a baby cannot wait. It was not the first time he decided someone else could do it faster. It was the first time it was my own grandchild. By the time I got there it was already tucked around her. I said it was beautiful, then I went home and put my tin away. There is one square of cloth left in that tin. Twenty-four years, and he has never once asked where it came from.
