After leaving the Goodman family's residence, I took a cab straight to Claire's place.

She listened as I told her everything that happened at dinner, then played back the recording. A cold smirk crossed her face. She had expected it.

"I knew they'd pull this," Claire said. "Guilt-tripping, twisting the story, making their shameless betrayal sound like they had no other choice.

"My mom's always played favorites with Ethan. In her eyes, he can do no wrong. Even when he screws up, she thinks he deserves to be forgiven."
