Chapter 1
My boyfriend, Ethan Harlow, was the chief of the surgical department. And his intern, Bella Foster, was a natural optimist.
Once, she took the wrong blood bag to a patient, she tilted her head and said, "Good thing it was just a single letter difference. Guess I'm lucky after all."
When she used the wrong suture during the operation, she clenched her fist and said, "Although I have to redo it, at least I'm getting some practice. I'm so lucky."
I reminded Ethan several times, but he just shrugged and told me, "She needs room to grow. Don't be too harsh."
During a critical surgery, she made a mistake with the dosage of anesthesia, and I took over urgently to save the patient.
But instead of being grateful, she threw herself into Ethan's arms and cried, "Why did Chloe steal my thunder? With my good luck, even if she didn't take over, the patient would still be fine!"
However, Ethan actually believed her words. To make it up to her, he decided to break the rules and promote her to the attending physician, which I strongly opposed.
Bella lost control of herself. She got drunk and crashed her car into someone, facing jail time.
Ethan, to get her out of trouble, even plotted to frame me and faked evidence, asking me to take the blame for her.
In prison, I was tortured to death by the inmates he paid off.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back to the moment before that critical surgery.
I could hear Bella whispering, "Please, let everything go smoothly today! Thank you!"
Ethan walked in and looked at her dotingly. "With you here, this surgery will definitely go smoothly," he said.
Then he publicly announced that the A-level aneurysm surgery would be assisted by the intern, Bella. While I, the associate chief physician, would be assisting her.
The operating room fell silent.
Last time, during this exact surgery, Bella messed up the dose of anesthesia, causing the patient to wake up during the operation, blood pressure to spike, and almost die on the operating table.
At a critical juncture, with nerves of steel and skill to match, I forcibly snatched the patient back from death's door.
This time, I wouldn't risk a patient's life, anyway.
"Bella, prepare for anesthesia," Ethan said.
Bella replied happily and picked up the syringe, ready to inject.
"Wait," I said coldly, stepped forward, and held her hand.
Bella looked up at me and asked angrily, "Chloe, what are you doing?"
I ignored her. Then, I turned to Lisa, the head nurse, and said calmly, "Lisa Morgan."
Lisa blinked in surprise and asked, "Chloe? What's wrong?"
"According to the hospital's safety protocol for special and A-level surgeries, two attending physicians and above must check the administration of anesthesia doses, and both sign off on the preoperative record book," I said.
My voice was not loud, but in the quiet operating room, everyone could hear my crystal words.
"The dosage is off," I added, pointing at the syringe.
Then I adjusted the dose to the correct safe level in front of everyone.
Bella's face instantly turned red. She muttered, "Chloe, you're too nervous. It's just a tiny bit off, what's the big deal?"
Ethan frowned and looked at me, his voice full of reproach as he said, "Chloe, you're making too much of a fuss. Bella knows what she's doing. You should believe her."
I didn't bother to argue with him. I just said coldly, "I'm the second-in-command for this surgery. So I must be responsible for the safety of the patient."
Then, the surgery began.
"Artery clamp," Ethan said in a deep voice.
Bella immediately handed him a tissue scissors.
Ethan's expression soured, but he still took them and changed the right instrument himself.
"Suction," Ethan said calmly.
Bella was in a hurry to get it, but she knocked the instrument tray off the table, causing a loud metallic crash with a harsh sound.
"Bella, focus on the monitor readings!" I snapped.
She jolted and hurried to check the screen. She stammered, "The blood pressure, the heart rate..."
I cut her off coldly, "Wrong! That's the oxygen saturation! The patient's blood pressure is dropping now!"
The entire surgery was a total mess. Bella kept fumbling, and I was constantly correcting her mistakes. In the end, no one died, and without danger.
I was like the strictest supervisor, not missing any of her subtle movements.
She handed the wrong tools and reported the wrong readings, and stood in the wrong place...
The atmosphere in the operating room was very terrifying.
Ethan looked more and more pissed off. He glared at me several times, but I turned a blind eye.
Go to hell with love, and go to hell with being harsh.
All I knew was that a breathing person was lying on that operating table behind me.
With the final stitch in place, the surgery was completed.
Ethan put the needle holder aside and breathed a long sigh of relief.
As soon as the success indicator lit up, Bella shouted happily, "We did it! Surgery was successful!"
