Chapter 5

I stared at the bowl of soup, its crystal-clear surface shimmering. But I knew exactly what was hidden inside. It was enough to make my throat swell and steal my voice away for good.

I looked up at her and gave her my brightest smile.

"Thanks, Mom," I said sweetly.

I picked up the spoon, scooped up a spoonful, and brought it to my mouth, but paused halfway.

"Mom, I have to get up early for my first day tomorrow. I'm afraid I won't be able to finish it all, and it would be such a waste," I said.
