Chapter 4
After that whole jumping-off-the-building incident, Thomas was completely shaken.
He moved me to a VIP room in the hospital, confiscated anything sharp, and even had the windows welded shut with iron bars.
Two bodyguards stood outside the door around the clock. He called it protecting my safety, but really, he was terrified I'd try to end it all again.
I lay in bed, lost in thought as I stared at the ceiling.
Was I really doomed to spend the rest of my life dealing with these nutcases? No way, I refused to accept this. That 3 million dollars was calling my name.
As I was wondering if I should tear the sheets into strips and hang myself, the hospital room door swung open.
Ruby walked in, supporting Lucy, who looked very pale.
Lucy was dressed in a loose hospital gown, her eyes red-rimmed and tearful, looking fragile and delicate. When she caught sight of the bandage on my head, a subtle hint of satisfaction flickered in her eyes.
"Wren, why put yourself through this?" Ruby scoffed, towering over me. "Do you really think throwing a tantrum and threatening to end it all will make Thomas forgive you? You killed our family's first grandson. That's an undeniable fact."
I rolled over, not even bothering to respond.
Lucy stepped forward, pretending to be all innocent as she gently took Ruby's hand. "Ruby, please don't blame Wren.
"Maybe she loves Thomas so much that she lost her head and pushed me. I don't blame her at all. As long as Thomas is happy, that's all that matters."
Her act was so shameless that I almost vomited.
Ruby's heart melted as she patted Lucy's hand. "You're such a good girl, always so kind. Don't worry. I won't let anyone bully you. I'm here today to stand up for Thomas."
With that, Ruby flung a document out of her bag and threw it onto my bed. "This is a divorce agreement. Thomas has already signed it.
"You're leaving with nothing. Get out of the Evans residence right now, and give up your place as Mrs. Evans to Lucy."
I shot up in bed, my eyes locked on the divorce papers.
"Leave with nothing? Get out right now?" I grabbed the papers and looked at the signature. It was messy, but it was definitely Thomas's.
Ruby sneered bitterly, "What? You think you deserve a share of the Evans family's money? You're nothing but an infertile woman who's mooched off the Evans family for ten years.
"You should be grateful we haven't made you pay for everything."
Instead of getting angry, I burst out laughing.
"Perfect. This is what I wanted." I snatched the pen from the bedside table and scribbled my name across the divorce papers with a flourish.
Ruby and Lucy were both stunned, clearly not expecting me to sign so eagerly.
"All done, here you go." I shoved the divorce papers back into Ruby's hands. "Oh, and do me a favor and tell Thomas I wish him and Lucy a lifetime of happiness and lots of kids."
Ruby eyed me suspiciously. "Are you up to something again?"
"What could I possibly be up to? I'm honestly thrilled." I threw off the covers and climbed out of bed. "Now that I'm not Mrs. Evans anymore, I guess I don't need to stick around and be an eyesore.
"Hang tight. I'll go die and get out of your hair for good."
As I looked around, I realized the room didn't even have a single knife.
Then my gaze locked onto the lunchbox made of stainless steel in Lucy's hands. That thing looked like it could actually cut.
I darted forward, snatched it from her, and smashed it onto the floor. The lid broke apart, exposing a sharp metal edge.
I grabbed the sharp piece of metal and pressed it right against the artery in my neck.
Lucy shrieked, scrambling backward in terror.
Ruby's eyes rolled back, and she clutched her chest, then collapsed stiff as a board onto the floor.
"Ruby!" Lucy's fake frailty vanished as she rushed over to help Ruby.
As the sharp edge was about to break my skin, the hospital room door burst open. Thomas stormed in like a whirlwind and kicked the metal piece right out of my hand.
