"She's my wife."

Owen finally stood up.

The nurse's smile froze. She apologized under her breath and hurriedly pulled the curtain closed.

Willa released Owen's hand, and tears immediately spilled from her eyes.

"I wasn't pretending to be you," she said, looking at me. "When the nurse misunderstood, I was so scared that I didn't even process what she'd said."

The fetal heart monitor continued its rapid beeping.

I stared at her perfectly intact makeup, then at the half-empty cup of juice beside her bed.

"What did the doctor say?"

"Her placenta is low, which caused some light bleeding," Owen…
