Iris cried, "Ms. Raines, please donate your bone marrow. My dad is critical.

"He's our family's backbone. If he dies, what will I do?"

I finally spoke, slow and hesitant.

"Are you asking me to donate bone marrow?"

The doctor interjected.

"We don't recommend it. Your heart recently failed due to an allergic reaction. Donating now risks your life."

Iris cried harder, clutching my hand desperately.

"Please, you have money, a career, and Mr. Hawthorne. I only have my dad!"

I tried to pull my hand away, but Julian gently held it.

"Nova, it's just a little. You'll be fine."
