Chapter 3
Seeing me stay silent, Richard ran his fingers through his hair in frustration.
"Ten thousand dollars is three months' pay for you, isn't it? Why isn't that enough for you?" he snapped.
"Is that what you want, to just let Emily die right in front of you?" he demanded.
I spoke softly.
"Don't hospitals have blood banks? Why do you have to jump through all these hoops just to make me come all the way here?" I asked.
"Emily said she did all this for you. She was worried you'd feel guilty, so she's giving you a chance to redeem yourself. Don't act like you don't know what's good for you," Richard said.
I nodded quietly, not bothering to argue anymore.
If they're dead set on blaming me for everything, what am I supposed to do? It's not like I have a choice.
At the hospital, the cold needle pierced my arm.
After drawing 200ml, the doctor was about to stop, but Richard held him back.
"200ml? That's not enough. Draw some more. If it's not enough, we'll have to do this all over again—why make Sophia go through this twice?" Richard said.
The doctor looked hesitant.
"Go ahead, draw more. Any consequences are on me," Richard said.
I lost track of how long I sat there, everything fading in and out, until they finally took the needle out of my arm.
Richard snatched up the blood bag and rushed into the hospital room without so much as a glance in my direction.
I staggered to my feet, ready to leave the hospital.
But two burly security guards stepped in front of me, blocking my way.
"Miss Sinclair, Mr. Evans said you can't leave until Miss Grant is out of surgery and safe," one of them said.
I frowned, my head spinning so badly I could barely stand.
"Why?" I asked.
The guard just stared at me, his face blank.
"Mr. Evans said you can't leave," he replied.
I shot them a look and slumped back into the chair.
I had no idea how much time had passed before the light above the operating room finally went out.
Richard stormed out, and as soon as he saw me, he kicked me so hard I hit the floor.
I collapsed to the floor, trembling, unable to even push myself up.
"Do you even know you cost Emily her baby?" Richard yelled, his voice full of rage.
I shot her a mocking look, my voice hoarse.
"She did this to herself," I said.
"She just had to go and ram herself into the bed. Honestly, it'd be a miracle if the baby made it through," I sneered.
Richard grabbed me by the collar.
"She's supposed to be your best friend! I never knew you could be so heartless," he shouted.
"Do you have any idea how much she suffered in that operating room?" he yelled.
"Everything that happened was because of you! All your suspicion—you're the one who drove her to this!" he screamed.
"You killed our baby!" he shouted.
There was nothing but apathy in my eyes as I looked at him.
"Richard, let's break up," I said, my voice steady.
