Once I got to the office, I submitted my transfer request.

I didn't want to stay with Charles anymore, playing the role of "Mrs. Stanton", who was always at his beck and call.

The HR director hesitated, looking awkward. "Ms. Summers, your transfer request will need Mr. Stanton's approval."

"Just go through the process," I told her. "If he says no, I'll just quit."

Word spread fast, and by noon, Charles's assistant came looking for me. "Mrs. Stanton, Mr. Stanton wants to see you in his office."
