Chapter 1
After getting a time travel, I completely changed and avoided every opportunity to run into Silas Quinn.
When he came to our regiment for a morale-boosting show, I pretended to be sick just to stay out of sight.
When he scraped his leg while climbing the mountain, I immediately called for the girl he's always loved to treat his wound.
When I knew he was planning to settle down in the countryside, I took advantage of the college entrance exams being reinstated and applied to a university in the capital, far away.
I only wish I'd never have to see him again in this life.
Because previously, I loved him for forty years, and he left me out in the cold for forty years.
It wasn't until I was on my deathbed that I realized he'd always been pining for the girl he could never have, blaming me for blocking their marriage.
Even as I lay dying, he was busy making a spectacle of arranging his wedding with the girl he'd always loved.
My daughter, Lila Nolan, was running around happily, completely forgetting me in the nursing home, leaving me alone to die.
Such a miserable life, I didn't want to start over again.
The news that the art troupe was coming for a show spread quickly through the whole regiment.
I was still groggy in my sleep when her voice shook me awake, it buzzing in my ears.
She said, "Wake up, Freya! Don't sleep! Weren't you always wanting to see Silas perform?
"Well, he's finally coming. Aren't you going to hurry up and give him the gift you prepared ages ago?"
Performance? Gift? What was she talking about?
Hadn't I already died?
Still suspicious, I opened my eyes, seeing a banner right at the foot of my bed that was clearly printed with "35th Regiment".
Wait! Was I really back?
The sound drifting in from the hallway only made it feel more real.
Hazel smiled and threw me a wet towel.
She teased, "You heard Silas is coming and now you're so excited you can't even think straight, right?
"But I gotta give you credit. He's been treating you coldly, and you don't give up.
"If it were me, I would have run away long ago!"
I held the warm towel and kept my head down in silence.
That suffocating feeling from dying in my last life still clung to me.
I could still hear Silas shouting right in my face, calling me bitch.
The memory of him and Lila, all smiles and laughter as they surrounded Elowen Tate, was still vivid in my mind.
Since this was the case, did I really have to repeat the tragedy?
I slowly wiped my face, hung the towel back, and slipped back under the covers.
I said, "I'm not going. You guys go ahead.
"Besides, I have nothing to do with Silas. Don't bring him and me up anymore, it'll stir up trouble for everyone."
Hazel and the other girls all froze, looking in surprise.
Hazel blurted out, "Freya, what's wrong with you? This is Silas, the guy you've been crushing on forever!"
"That's right. You've been chasing him for ages, and you even bought him imported chocolate. We all know about it!" another girl, Alice Smith, chimed in.
Someone else teased, "So are you changing your game now? Playing hard to get?"
They cracked up, teasing me.
I couldn't blame them for doubting me. My pursuit of Silas was practically legendary. Everyone knew about it, and I did a lot of embarrassing things for him.
They didn't even believe that I would give up on Silas.
I didn't bother with them. I just glanced at the box of chocolate I'd been hoarding in the cabinet, took it out, and tore it open.
I said, "I'm really not going. I guess I caught a chill last night, and now I've got a splitting headache. Please help me tell the captain.
"And here, you guys can share this."
Alice took the chocolate I shared, her eyes going wide. "Wait. Don't you keep this for Silas?" she asked.
I replied, "Why bother? Didn't I say it all? I have nothing to do with him."
Back then, Silas casually remarked that he envied a member of his unit for having imported candy.
I immediately asked someone to buy him the most popular chocolate abroad.
But soon, I turned around and found the whole box in Elowen's hands.
As she saw me, she made a point of showing it off, looking all smug.
"This? I just told Silas I had low blood sugar, so he handed it over without hesitation," she said, flaunting it.
If I still threw myself at him, knowing full well how things would end, I'd have to be crazy!
Seeing I wasn't budging, my roommates didn't push me any longer.
They called out a quick goodbye and went together to the auditorium for the performance.
Since it was a rare day off from training, I tidied up and got ready to go out for a walk, planning to pretend I needed some medicine so I'd have an excuse when I got back.
I wandered outside for a day.
As dusk settled in, I guessed the performance was over, so I set off to go back.
