The footsteps stopped two feet behind my shoulder.

I didn't turn my head. I pressed the phone harder against my ear and waited for the sentence I had just put down between us to come back as something I could carry.

"Good." Three seconds. The vending machine cycled down, then back up. "I'll send someone."

"He's twenty minutes out of Manhattan. Edward will be at the south ER entrance in under an hour. Stay where there are people, Lena."
