Emily's mom was so startled she let go.

Emily looked at me, her eyes rimmed red.

"David, are you really throwing away everything we had?" she asked.

"Everything we had?" I repeated, rolling the words around in my mouth.

"You want to talk to me about that?"

I laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was the kind of laugh you let out when you realize just how messed up the world really is.
