Chapter 4
4.
The day of the gala.
At 7 AM, I dropped Noah off at my parents' house.
He bounced happily into his grandparents' arms.
I stood by the car and watched him for a long time.
Then I turned around and got in.
I drove to a private men's styling studio.
The owner was an old college buddy.
"Ethan? Is that you?"
He looked me up and down, stunned.
"What happened to..."
"How did I let myself go?"
I finished his sentence and smiled.
"Today, I need you to find the guy I used to be."
Three hours later, the man in the mirror looked like a stranger.
My hair was cut sharp, my beard trimmed clean. My jawline was defined, my eyes piercing.
The black velvet suit was tailored flawlessly, pulling in at the waist just right.
"You were always this sharp."
My friend's eyes were a little red.
"You've swallowed a lot of pride these last few years."
"It was the life I chose."
I stared at my reflection.
"I'm fine. Just slept too long. Time to wake up."
That afternoon, Rachel sent me a text:
"Forensic audit submitted preliminary files to the DA and state tax."
"DA petitioned for arrest warrants. Judge signed off. Police have them."
"State tax issued subpoenas for the ledgers."
"We proceed tonight as planned."
"Once you hit send, I file the TRO, asset freeze, and tracing with the Superior Court."
A second message popped up:
"Proof of shares and ID sent to corporate legal and the event director. Hayes informed the host. Majority shareholder speech is on the agenda."
I replied:
"Copy."
At 6 PM, I arrived at The Sterling Hotel.
Employees were gathered outside The Observatory Ballroom, all dressed to the nines. The younger staff were excitedly taking selfies.
"Heard the grand prize is a trip to Europe!"
"Melissa's going all out."
"Of course she is. This year's different."
Through the chatter, I heard Blake's name.
"Blake's definitely the main character tonight. That suit is thirty-five hundred bucks."
"She spoils him. Heard she rearranged the whole itinerary for him."
I adjusted the collar of my overcoat, fixed my cuffs, and unlocked my phone.
Marcus sent a text:
"Video feed from the public area is live to the remote backup. Visuals clear."
I replied:
"Copy."
I took a deep breath and walked up to the entrance.
The event director checked my ID against the guest list, then gave a subtle nod to the host.
"Mr. Carter. Your speech is on the agenda," he said quietly.
I pushed past the heavy velvet curtains at the side of the ballroom and stepped inside.
It was like stepping into another world.
The champagne towers refracted the dazzling light pouring down from the crystal chandeliers.
Guests in luxury gowns and tailored suits mingled, their laughter blending into a dull roar.
I stayed hidden in the shadows of the curtains, scanning the room.
And then, I saw them.
Melissa was standing near the stage in a silver-gray gown, her posture perfect.
She was looking up at the man next to her, a soft smile on her lips, her eyes full of tenderness.
Blake was in a dark gray tuxedo, shoulders broad, the tailoring immaculate.
So that was the thirty-five-hundred-dollar suit.
My stomach churned, but my face remained entirely blank.
The host's voice boomed over the speakers:
"Welcome to the Meridian Technologies Ten-Year Anniversary Gala!"
Applause erupted.
"Over the past decade, we've faced countless challenges. None of this would be possible without the vision of one person—"
The spotlight hit Melissa.
She walked onto the stage with effortless grace and took the microphone.
"Thank you."
She smiled.
"Ten years is a long time. Long enough to build a dream. But it also feels like just yesterday we were popping champagne for our first client."
Laughter rippled through the crowd.
"And on this journey, the person I need to thank the most is the one who's been by my side through it all."
She paused, her eyes locking onto Blake in the front row.
The massive screens behind her immediately cut to a close-up of his face.
"Blake. Come up here."
The applause, cheers, and whistles nearly blew the glass dome off the ceiling.
Blake stood up elegantly, adjusted his jacket, and walked up the stairs step by step.
Melissa reached out, took his hand, and pulled him to the center of the stage.
Under the spotlight, they stood shoulder to shoulder, looking exactly like the perfectly curated startup power couple they were pretending to be.
"You all know Blake as our Director of Administration and Operations."
Melissa wrapped an arm around his shoulder.
"But what you don't know is that he's the one who walked with me through the darkest years."
A video began playing on the screens.
A cramped, run-down office. Silhouettes working late into the night. Clinking glasses at a modest celebration dinner.
Blake was in every single photo.
And I—the man who was actually there during those years—had been completely erased.
The voiceover played, dripping with emotion:
"Five years as partners. We weathered every storm together."
They had packaged a five-year working relationship into a love story, hiding the fact that the actual betrayal had been going on for three years.
So while I was grinding myself into dust for our family and our son, slowly losing touch with the outside world, she had already replaced me with a new "partner."
"Today, I just want to say..."
Melissa turned to him and took both his hands.
"Thank you. I couldn't have done this without you."
Blake's eyes welled up.
"Mel..."
Someone in the crowd yelled:
"Kiss!"
Melissa laughed and shook her head.
And then, they leaned in and shared a brief, public kiss.
The room exploded.
Right then, Blake took the microphone.
"Actually, we have one more announcement tonight."
He paused, his smile blindingly arrogant.
"We're getting married."
The room went dead silent for exactly one second.
Then, an explosive wave of applause and screaming tore through the ballroom.
The camera zoomed in on them.
The absolute adoration in her eyes. The flush on his cheeks. And the ring on his left ring finger—the exact same design as my wedding band.
So this was what they meant by going public.
Not to me.
To the whole world.
I stared at the man and woman on stage, soaking in the blessings of hundreds of people. I watched this "epic romance" that had entirely erased my existence.
The last remaining fragment of the old Ethan Carter shattered and fell away.
Fine.
Since you built the stage and played out the prologue so beautifully—
It's my turn to step into the spotlight.
I unlocked my phone and opened the company's private Slack channel.
Rachel had already highlighted exactly what was legally cleared to be released.
I uploaded the fact summary, fully vetted by legal, into the Slack channel.
It included chat excerpts, joint account and corporate payment records, hotel receipts, public photos from the company archives, and legally preserved audio backups.
And Blake's public Instagram post.
The complete financial ledgers, full hotel bills, and raw audio had already been routed through secure legal channels directly to the board, corporate counsel, and external attorneys.
I selected the summary and hit send.
The progress bar shot to one hundred percent.
Almost instantly, a wave of notification chimes began pinging across the ballroom.
People looked down at their screens. Their expressions morphed from confusion, to absolute shock, to sheer horror.
Whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire.
Hundreds of eyes snapped back to the stage.
Melissa was still basking in the cheers, completely oblivious.
I dialed Rachel's number.
She picked up on the third ring.
"Files are out to the board and legal."
"Copy."
Rachel's voice was clipped and cold.
"Filing the TRO, asset freeze, and tracing with the Superior Court now. Police are moving in. The courts will take it from here."
I hung up, slipped off my black overcoat, and handed it to a passing waiter.
Then, my polished dress shoes clicking against the floor, I began walking toward the stage.
The sound of my footsteps cut sharply through the rapidly quieting room.
Someone in the front row noticed me and turned their head in confusion.
Then a second person. Then a third.
The whispers died entirely.
Every single pair of eyes in the room locked onto me.
Melissa finally realized something was wrong. She looked up, her gaze cutting through the crowd.
And then, she froze on my face.
The smile on her lips died instantly.
Her pupils dilated. Her mouth fell slightly open.
That mask of untouchable grace finally cracked.
I walked up the stairs and onto the stage.
The host, having already verified my identity, immediately handed me the spare microphone.
Melissa's hand hovered in mid-air.
I took the mic, my fingertips brushing past hers.
She recoiled like she'd been electrocuted.
I turned to face the hundreds of shocked, confused, and eager faces in the crowd, and I smiled.
"Good evening. I'm Ethan Carter."
"Melissa's legal husband. We've been married for ten years. We have a three-year-old son."
I paused, my eyes sliding over her bloodless face.
"I am also the majority shareholder of this company, holding fifty-one percent of the voting rights."
