Chapter 2
After discussing the insurance claim, a bystander told me the people in the car had been taken to the hospital.
At the hospital entrance, I asked about Nathan's hospital room. I was about to enter when I heard his weak voice inside.
"Olivia, you're still in your postpartum recovery. Sit down and rest. Don't tire yourself out," Nathan said.
"I just wanted to take you out for a spin to help you relax, but I never thought we'd end up in a car accident. If anything happened to you, I'd never forgive myself," he continued.
"Once this is all over, once the wedding's done and I've got all the shares, I'll finally be able to give you a good life. You've been through so much with me, and it breaks my heart," he added.
Nathan's words cut through me like a knife, icy wind whipping through the wound, leaving me shivering and hurting inside.
I'd been with him for six years. I drank myself sick, literally ended up in the hospital with stomach bleeding, all for his business deals, and he never thought twice about my pain.
But Olivia just pulled a couple of all-nighters helping him with some plans, and suddenly she was the one who had "suffered" with him for ages. How was that fair?
The wedding I'd been dreaming of for six years? Turns out it was nothing but a calculated move to snatch the shares I owned.
I gripped the doorknob, took a deep breath, blinked back my tears, and finally pushed the door open.
Nathan's words came to an abrupt halt.
My gaze fell on the baby cradled in Olivia's arms as she sat quietly to the side.
The little one still had tear stains on the corners of her eyes. She must've just cried herself to sleep.
Nathan frowned slightly, clearly surprised to see me at the hospital. Then he smiled and said, "What brings you here?"
"Ms. Lee's baby just turned one month old today, so I went to visit her. I didn't expect to get into a car accident on the way," he added.
That clumsy lie might have fooled me once, but at that moment, all I felt was irony.
The doctor pushed open the door and gave an update on Nathan's condition.
Then he looked over at the baby in Olivia's arms and teased Nathan, "Looks just like you, Nathan."
I barely managed a smile, keeping silent.
Nathan didn't notice anything was off with me. His eyes were fixed on the baby and Olivia, overflowing with love, yet somehow holding it all back.
Even a stranger could see the resemblance between the baby and Nathan, but when it came to me, he didn't even try to explain himself. His mind was never on me, not even for a second.
It's been like this for the past six years, as if ignoring me was just a habit for him.
I nodded politely to the doctor, showed him to the door, and casually asked how Nathan was doing.
When I got back to the room, Nathan was already cradling the baby, and Olivia was helping him up.
Instinctively, I reached out to help, but Nathan jerked away from me, giving me a guarded look. "What are you doing?" he said coldly.
My hand froze in mid-air, and I quickly pulled it back.
Olivia, standing nearby, chuckled softly. "Ms. Wynn, let me help Nathan."
I looked up and met her taunting gaze.
It had been months since I'd last seen her, and her face looked fuller than before. She looked fresh, not a trace of exhaustion from childbirth.
Clearly, Nathan had been doting on her lately.
The room fell silent. Nathan seemed to realize he'd overreacted. He glanced at me, trying to smooth things over.
"Sophie, why don't you head home first? I'll take Olivia and the baby back," he said.
