Chapter 1
Chapter One
The clock struck midnight as I turned eighteen, but instead of celebration, my body became a battlefield.
Pain tore through me like lightning, starting in my chest and radiating outward until every nerve ending screamed. I collapsed onto my bed, my limbs thrashing uncontrollably as something primal and powerful clawed its way up from the depths of my soul.
"What's happening to me?" I gasped, clawing at my sheets as my back arched off the mattress.
This was supposed to be the moment my wolf awakened—a sacred rite of passage for every werewolf at eighteen. But this... this was something else entirely.
Two sensations hit me simultaneously, like twin lightning strikes to my chest. Each one powerful, overwhelming, and absolutely foreign.
*Mate bonds.*
Not one, but two.
"No, no, no," I whimpered, tasting copper as blood filled my mouth. "This can't be happening."
The first bond felt like ice—cold, powerful, and utterly dominating. It slammed into me with such force that I could barely breathe, freezing my veins and stealing my breath.
The second was just as powerful but the complete opposite—burning, possessive, and suffocating in its intensity. It scorched through me, setting every nerve ablaze.
Together, they threatened to tear me apart from the inside.
I rolled off my bed and hit the floor with a sickening thud. My body convulsed as the two bonds warred within me, each pulling in opposite directions. I could feel my bones shifting, my skin stretching, as if my very essence was being ripped in two.
"I—I can't..." Blood trickled from my nose, warm and sticky against my lips. "Please stop..."
But the pain only intensified. My vision blurred, then darkened at the edges. Just before consciousness slipped away, I heard the window of my small bedroom shatter.
Glass rained down as a massive figure leaped through the opening. The scent of pine and winter frost filled the room—powerful, intoxicating, and utterly terrifying.
"Mine," a deep voice growled.
I forced my eyes open just enough to see him—tall, imposing, with eyes so dark they seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it. He moved toward me with predatory grace, his aura so overwhelming that the air itself seemed to bend around him.
"Alpha Xavier," I whispered, recognizing the notorious leader of the Shadow Pack from the stories that had haunted my nightmares since childhood.
Before he could reach me, the door to my bedroom exploded inward. Another figure strode in—equally imposing, but radiating heat rather than cold.
"Step away from her," this new arrival commanded, his voice like smooth velvet wrapped around steel.
The scent of sandalwood and burning embers filled the room, mingling with Xavier's frosty pine in a suffocating cocktail of power.
"Alpha Damien," I breathed, terror clawing up my throat.
The leader of the Blood Moon Pack—Xavier's sworn enemy for generations—stood in my bedroom, his amber eyes blazing with fury and something else... something that looked almost like possession.
"She is mine by right of first claim," Xavier snarled, his hand reaching for my arm.
Damien moved with supernatural speed, intercepting him. "She belongs to me. Look at her—she's clearly one of my pack."
"Your pack?" Xavier's laugh was cruel and cutting. "Search her memories. She's never set foot in your territory."
They circled each other like wolves preparing to fight, their century-old hatred crackling in the air between them. I tried to speak, to tell them I wasn't part of either pack, but only managed a weak whimper.
"She's dying," Damien observed coldly. "The dual bond is killing her."
Xavier's eyes narrowed. "Dual bond? Impossible."
But they both knew it was true. Somehow, impossibly, I was bound to two Alphas—sworn enemies who had been at war for generations.
Xavier reached me first, his fingers wrapping around my throat with bruising force. He lifted me partially off the ground, his eyes boring into mine.
"What kind of witch are you?" he hissed, his voice deadly quiet. "What game is this?"
I couldn't answer. His grip tightened, cutting off my air supply as black spots danced across my vision.
"Let her go," Damien commanded, his Alpha tone making the windows rattle.
Xavier didn't release me but turned to face his rival. "You dare give me orders in my territory?"
"Your territory?" Damien's laugh was sharp and mocking. "She's clearly not yours. Look at how she reacts to you—fear, not recognition."
Damien lunged forward, ripping Xavier's hand from my throat with such force that I heard bones crack. Before I could collapse to the floor, Damien grabbed a fistful of my hair, yanking my head back painfully.
"Tell me whose conspiracy this is," he demanded, his amber eyes blazing with fury. "Did you plan this? Are you some kind of spy?"
"I—I don't know what's happening," I managed to gasp, tears streaming down my face.
The two Alphas turned to each other, their combined Alpha pressure crushing down on me like a physical weight. Blood trickled from my nose, my ears, even my eyes as the pressure intensified.
"She's not lying," Xavier finally said, his voice tight with suspicion. "But that doesn't make this any less suspicious."
"Agreed," Damien replied, the word sounding like a curse on his lips.
They turned back to me, and I saw something terrible in their eyes—determination, possession, and a shared purpose that chilled me to my core.
"We need to mark her," Xavier said quietly. "Both of us."
Damien nodded once, his jaw tight. "To secure our claim."
"No," I whispered, trying to scramble away. "Please, no."
But they moved as one, pinning me between them. Xavier's teeth found my neck first, sinking into the soft flesh on my left side. The pain was blinding, but before I could scream, Damien's fangs pierced my right side.
I screamed then—a sound so raw and primal it barely seemed human. Blood poured down my neck as their teeth tore through skin and muscle, branding me with their claim.
As they pulled back, blood dripping from their chins, I felt something inside me shatter. The dual marking wasn't just a claim—it was a curse, a supernatural torture that would plague me every moment of every day.
"The bond is complete," Xavier said, wiping blood from his mouth with the back of his hand.
Damien's eyes gleamed with something that might have been satisfaction. "Now she can never escape either of us."
As darkness claimed me once more, I heard their parting words:
"This isn't over."
And somehow, I knew that my nightmare was just beginning.
