Chapter 3

Laura met me at a coffee shop.
"I'm drafting the petition," she said. "If we can prove Daniel has been hiding funds or inappropriately transferring marital assets, we'll have much more leverage in the financial settlement."
I stirred my coffee. "What do you need from me?"
"Public information, household financial records. Do not log into any company systems yourself. We will issue a spoliation letter and track the money through official ledgers."
My mind went straight to Claire's Instagram.
For the past six months, her posts had become increasingly lavish. Floor-to-ceiling night views from a new condo, the steering wheel of a white Porsche, designer shopping bags, her kid dressed in high-end boutique brands.
She had no job. She was freshly divorced.
Where was the money coming from?
"She mentioned her ex-husband barely pays alimony," I murmured.
Laura nodded. "Save everything she's posted. Dates, handles, links. Keep it all."
When I got home, I scrubbed Claire's entire Instagram feed. I screenshotted the condo, the car, the jewelry, the luxury bags, the posts about her premium cleaning service.
Then, I called Tessa Parker.
Tessa was my former subordinate at Hale Systems. When I stepped down, she took over a large chunk of my portfolio.
"Natalie?" she answered, her voice hushed.
"Tessa, I need you to confirm something for me. Have there been any unusual personal expenses or massive payouts from the company recently?"
Dead silence on the line.
When she spoke, it was a whisper. "Yes. Daniel approved multiple payouts linked to Claire over the last six months. The biggest one was for her condo. It was a massive hit."
My knuckles turned white. "What else?"
"A luxury car. And a ton of miscellaneous expenses. Designer goods, childcare costs, housekeeping... Natalie, the books look totally wrong."
Laura moved fast. She issued the formal demand and a preservation of evidence notice immediately.
Using my screenshots and public social media trails, she tracked the money.
Approximately $750,000 in misappropriated funds.
$450,000 for a condo down payment and furnishings. $120,000 for the Porsche. And around $180,000 in luxury shopping, childcare, and domestic services.
I stared at the summary Laura emailed me, feeling like a blunt object had just caved in my chest.
It wasn't about the money.
It was because just a week ago, I had mentioned booking postpartum care and recovery services.
It cost about $18,000.
Daniel had frowned and said, "That's too expensive."
At that exact moment, Claire was posting her new designer bags on Instagram.
...
Daniel came home after midnight, reeking of alcohol.
He flinched when he saw me sitting in the living room. "You're still up?"
"Laura got the preliminary tracking results," I said. "You spent roughly $750,000 on Claire."
Daniel's face turned to stone.
"Her condo, her car, all that garbage... you paid for it?"
Silence.
More silence.
"Speak."
My voice was dangerously quiet.
"Natalie, Claire just got divorced. It's hard raising a kid alone. I just wanted to help—"
"Help her buy a luxury condo? A Porsche?"
I stared at him.
"Daniel, our first year in business, we carried inventory on the city bus to save twenty bucks on shipping."
"And now you're just handing over $750,000?"
He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
"Seven days," I said. "You return every cent that can be recovered, and you stop touching our assets."
"Otherwise, Laura files the divorce petition, requests a Temporary Restraining Order, and demands a full forensic audit of Hale Systems."
Daniel stared at me, horrified. "Are you insane? You'd destroy me over this?"
"It's not about the money."
I looked him dead in the eye.
"It's about me and my child."
He stood there like a mute statue.
Always the same. Whenever he couldn't face a problem, he just shut down.
"Seven days," I repeated. "Otherwise, we settle this in court."
I walked back to the bedroom. As the door clicked shut, I heard him collapse heavily onto the sofa, followed by the flick of a lighter.
I touched my stomach.
The pain didn't matter anymore.
I just wanted to take my baby and leave.
And Daniel was going to pay the price.
