Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
My husband proposed to another woman with the ring I had designed for myself.
He did it beneath the crystal lights of the Rinaldi House anniversary gala.
Family elders, jewel buyers, and cameras surrounded him as the celebration streamed across the country.
"Tonight, I intend to keep a promise," Matteo said from the center of the ballroom. For one breath, I thought he meant the promise he'd made to me.
Years ago, we'd married in a quiet courthouse with only his attorney as a witness.
Matteo had asked me to remain hidden until he secured his place as head of the Rinaldi family.
Then he'd give me a real proposal and tell the world I was his wife.
That morning, Matteo had sent me to his private safe for a contract. Behind the folder sat a velvet box.
Inside was the setting I'd sketched after our courthouse wedding.
Two narrow bands crossed beneath a pear-shaped diamond. It was the ring I wanted when hiding was over.
Matteo turned toward the front table. His eyes found mine across the room, and I took one step forward.
Then he walked past me.
Bianca Salvatore rose in a silver gown.
Her father controlled the alliance the Rinaldi family had spent months negotiating. The guests weren't applauding a business agreement. They were watching a love story.
Matteo took Bianca's hand and lowered himself onto one knee.
Applause broke around me before he opened the box. Camera flashes caught the diamond and Bianca's delighted smile.
"Bianca, will you stand beside me and unite our families?" Matteo asked.
She offered him her left hand. "I thought you'd never ask." The ring slipped onto her finger.
My thumbnail pressed into my palm.
I remembered shaping the wax model at two in the morning while Matteo slept on my workshop sofa.
He'd kissed my ink-stained fingers and promised that my name would hang above a studio door one day.
The family had needed another collection, another private client, another year. I had given them all three.
Bianca lifted her hand toward the photographers and looked directly at me. "It's perfect," she said. "Matteo was right. Elena always knows what suits me."
Several guests turned toward the woman they knew as Rinaldi House's quiet designer.
No one saw a wife watching her husband place their promise on somebody else's hand.
Matteo rose, and Bianca kissed his cheek. The ballroom erupted again.
He looked at me over her shoulder, but I stayed where I was.
The orchestra began playing. Matteo's advisers surrounded the newly engaged couple while reporters called for another photograph.
I set my untouched champagne on a passing tray and walked toward the exit.
Matteo caught up with me beside the cloakroom. "Elena, go home."
I glanced through the open doors. Bianca stood beneath the Rinaldi crest, showing my ring to another camera.
"I need to finish this," he said. "Wait for me, and I'll explain everything."
I had waited through secret anniversaries and celebrations where I entered through the staff door.
My work made his family famous while our marriage remained something he could hide before stepping outside.
I took my coat from the attendant. "Enjoy your celebration."
Outside, the evening air smelled of rain and car exhaust. My phone showed three messages from the Rinaldi atelier.
Beneath them was an old conversation I hadn't opened in months.
Gabriel De Luca had invited me to show a personal piece at his charity auction. Matteo called him a rival who collected other people's weaknesses.
I had declined without asking what Gabriel saw in my work.
Now I opened the conversation and typed, Is tomorrow night's invitation still open?
His reply arrived before my car reached the curb.
Tomorrow night. I also have something that should have been yours years ago.
