I checked into a hotel twenty minutes from St. Peter’s and locked the door behind me.

Only then did I realize how tightly I had been gripping the handle of my suitcase.

I sat on the edge of the bed and called Margaret Lewis, the divorce attorney I had contacted before Family Welcome Day.

“I left the house,” I told her.
